Product Description

Review

"There's been a spate of books about age. . . . [this] is the latest and definitely one of the best. . . . her writing is so fluid and amusing that you mostly forget that old age is supposed to be such a gloom. . . . If anyone doubts that old age can actually be interesting, this is the book for them." --"Observer"

Book Description

* Deeply thoughtful, wry and resilient, this fascinating and absorbing book about growing older is a life-enhancing look at what all of us - if we are lucky - can aspire to

I loved every word of this beautifully, thoughtfully written book. But it is a book for people who like to read and to think at the same time - something some of the reviewers here are clearly not interested in doing. And, yes, it's not a joke book, but it is, at times, very funny about some pretty serious subjects.

A wonderfully rueful, witty, elegantly written, piercingly accurate - and often very funny - meditation on old age. I absolutely identify with her, constantly chuckling with wry recognition, and dammit, I'm five years ahead of her!

Jane Miller writes appealingly and objectively about what it's like to be old. She covers a good range of topics, including the
'hospital years' as she calls them, relations with younger folk, and death, to name a few. Throughout, she acknowledges the realities of declining physical and mental health that attend the process of being old. One has to be tough to last very long on this journey of old age. But she sustains a reasonable optimism, suggesting that in some respects one can come to new insights and understandings that greatly enrich the life of old people. I recommend the book highly.

3.5 stars I think.
Some great insights into an intelligent, thoughtful woman's ideas and stories on ageing and dying.
A few parts I skipped - almost book reviews of books she likes on the subject that just didn't interest me.
Lots to digest, and I now am thinking about how I will be using my (hopefully decades long) retirement years.

I really appreciate the candid, humorous and relaxed treatment of the subject of ageing and it's effect on especially women.

I do object to having to write something after I have rated a product. I have expressed my opinion by rating it haven't I?
