Why are people so excited about Jane Austen and the Regency period?
It was 1796 when Jane started writing Pride and Prejudice in her small house in Chawton, Hampshire. Could she have ever imagined that over 200 years later, her stories would interest millions of people worldwide? Through award-winning television and film adaptations, the BBC and Hollywood have made millions from Jane Austen. But how have stories from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries engaged a modern audience? Why are we so fascinated by the period?
Crazy about Jane offers a behind the scenes look at the largest International Jane Austen Festival. We meet people who have travelled from all over the world to celebrate everything Austen!
The film highlights costume, manners and etiquette, diet, dancing, literature, performance and the passionate people who continue to dedicate their lives to celebrate the remarkable legacy of Jane Austen. We also reveal the inside story on the modern-day rejection of Jane Austen's most famous novel, submitted by David Lassman under a Pseudonym.
This unique documentary created by Bath film-makers Nautilus Moving Image, includes previously unseen footage of the festival in Bath, where Jane lived and drew inspiration for her novels.
We were really excited to be given exclusivity and the opportunity to film at the festival. We werent sure what to expect but we found the whole process hugely inspiring. The people who took part are a mixture of eccentrics, fans and people just interested to be entertained. It was good to be involved in a project that was so inclusive, everyone was welcome and included so refreshing in this day and age.
