I was a little disappointed with this book to be honest.
The recipes are ok and the cupcakes turn out ok, but they're nothing special, at least I don't think so.
Despite that, the book is user friendly, as in, it contains plenty of info about frostings, ingredients and loads of decorating techniques (however I would REALLY only recommend that if you're catering for 5 yr olds).
I was after something a little more sophisticated i think and I just couldn't get round the fact that most of the cupcakes looked like a child had made them!

This was one of my first books about cupcakes - now I have plenty, but I still keep reaching for this one. There are a lot of good recipes such as gingerbread cupcakes, apple caramel cupcakes, coffee etc. There are also many recipes on frostings, icing and toppings and I like how it is a chapter in the back of the book about combining the different recipes with icings etc.
Most of the book covers different themes with decorating techniques and creative ideas for decorating such as New Year's Eve, Christmas, birthdays etc. There are some cute ideas and I'm sure a lot of kids will love the fun decorations.
I think I've tested about one third of all the recipes, and most of them were successful. Some are delicious, others are just average. I miss photos to accompany the recipes, there are pictures in the decorating chapter but the pages with recipes are just text.
What I don't like is that some of the decorated cupcakes look a bit tacky and some of the recipes have been failures, so I never know for sure whether it turns out well or a complete disaster.

I really like this book for the breadth of options available when making the cupcakes.. Yes, I wouldn't use it for formal occasions but it has so many recipes and flavours that it really stands out.
Read the start of the book as a base before you start making any of the cakes as there are some basic tips there, as well as the estimate for yield of each recipe. I would also recommend checking the picture of the finished cupcake to estimate whether you'd like to make more frosting than the recipe suggests.. Some recipe suggestions use much less than I'd expect.
Another recommendation is that the author seems to leave the addition of wet ingredients much later in the recipe which for me resulted in the mix being dragged up the whisks of the hand mixer and into the motor.. not very good! I found it was helpful to add some wet ingredients earlier to prevent this.
Finally, there's no Red Velvet cupcake recipe - I recommend to any cupcake maker to find a recipe on the web and make it - it'll be the jewel in your repertoire.

Great Book
Great book with some lovely ideas, I bought several cake decorating books and this is one of the best.
