Everybody expected the 2010 remake of George Romero's "The Crazies" (1973) to follow the usual remake pattern - bigger budget, better effects, worse film. I'm pleased to report that the 2010 release of "The Crazies" bucks the trend and then some. This movie is what "Dawn Of The Dead" could have and should have been. This movie works so well on so many different levels. It is beutifully shot and could be enjoyed for that reason alone, but - and this is so rare in remakes - the narrative grips you from the start and doesn't let up. The basic premise is the same as the 1973 original - a government screw-up sees a small back-water town infected with a biological agent meant for "the enemy". What is so engaging about the remake is that the protagonists; the hard-case but sensitive town sheriff, his compassionate, pregnant wife and the edgy, loyal deputy - don't seem like stereotypes, but characters we can empathise with. The sense of paranoia is maintained throughout as our heroes have to try to escape through a backdrop peopled with a) the crazies, b) gung-ho rednecks, c) scared small-town people, and d) most chilling of all, the millitary, charged with "containing or eradicating" the problem. This is the best film of its genre I have seen in a hell of along time. As well as the (very well done) gore, and the tension levels which are maintained throughout - there is a political message in this film which makes it stand head and shoulders above the usual blood and guts torture porn crap being churned out at the moment. Ignore it at your peril!

Well its not another zombie film but kind of fits into the same box. Dont bother with the original 70s version and the remake has the same feel as the walking dead series. So the acting and effects are up to date with the times. Basically a plane goes down leaking a virus in a small towns water supply turning the residents crazy. This shouldnt spoil the film for anyone as there is pleanty of action suspence and nail biting to be had.
