Product Description

CD Description

First album in an astonishing seventeen years - her last was 'Mistaken Identity' way back in 1991 - from the legendary,five-times-Grammy-winning disco diva probably best remembered for the colossal hits 'Hot Stuff' and 'I Feel Love'. Layering fat retro synths over crunky hip-hop beats, topped withSummer's incomparable voice - which sounds as potent as it did back in her 70s heyday - this is a hugely enjoyable collection which simultaneously manages to sound both timelesslyclassic and relentlessly modern.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Vintage, 25 Oct 2008
By The Wolf (uk) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
A fine wine can take years to reach it's best in the bottle.

So too a fine voice.

We have known that Ms Summer ( Nee Gaines ) has been in possession
of such an instrument for some thirty years.
An instrument always long on power but somewhat wanting in the
emotional expression department.

My last memory of her involves a somewhat drunken night in a New York
bar of doubtful repute, dancing my paws sore to 'Con Te Partiro' with a
wide-eyed Latino beauty whose dark gaze betrayed ignoble intentions with
regard to my black leather jeans. ( Yes - Even The Wolf has lived a little ! )

Warm memories then and a welcome return.

'Crayons' delivers a highly varied palette during the course of it's generous
thirteen tracks. Rock, R&B, Latin, Soulful Ballad and Hip Hop all get a look in.
The writing is strong, the musicianship and production remaining always
on Ms Summer's side.

The voice has never (ever) sounded better. For perhaps the first time there
is a real sense of this great artist loosening up and truly enjoying herself.

Listen to 'Slide Over Backwards' ! It's difficult to believe it really is our heroine !

'Be Myself Again' is a glorious performance by any standard. A great torchsong
beautifully sung. The warm bloom and expressiveness in her voice has hardly
been bettered in her long career.

Riches aplenty elsewhere on this splendid release.

With it's raucous cheerleader refrain 'Stamp Your Feet' is a worthy opener.

'The Queen Is Back' sounds like a woman reclaiming her territory
with sassy confidence.

'Sand On My Feet' finds yet another new dimension in this recreated being's voice.
Gorgeous !!

'Science Of Love', with its' driving synth and drums, provides yet another opportunity
for personal innovation.

'Drivin' Down Brazil' and its' lilting samba rhythm adds yet more spice to
an already mouthwatering experience.

An album to savour and to treasure.

Ms Summer's Epiphany !

Long May She Reign !

Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars the queen of disco takes her crown!, 3 Jun 2008
By Mr. Nathan Armstrong - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
the queen of the disco scene in the 70's! the pop queen in the 80's! donna rates up there with diana ross and barbra striesand as a true legend!

its been 17 years since she released a studio album and once you put it one you hear the voice has none of its power or uniqueness..is there such a word!

track by track

"stamp your feet" is gonna be a huge dance anthem which she previewed on american idol in the usa! donna is in perfect vocal form..a catchy pop dance track 9/10

"mr music" follows suit and you realise donna is out for new converts! its perfect dance crew...the younger newer listeners can bodypop while us older one can indulge ourselves in disco heaven and bob along! 9/10

"crayons" a duet with ziggy marley is full of carribean flavour with street sounds..full of summer and a perfect match of vacal talents 9/10

"the queen is back"...donna reclaims her crown..this must become her anthem! its got a timbaland feel and the lyrics are perfect for donna's comeback!amazing 10/10 and a sure chioce for a single!

"fame" has an electro feel and the justin/timbaland feel...stunning 10/10

"sand on my feet" is a lovely semi-acoutic track..with lovely lyrics..perfect break from the dance tracks 9/10

"drivin down brazil" is very latin american...its a good track but it gets a bit lost and you want to get back to disco donna 7/10

"i'm a fire" put you right back on the floor! another donna classic that could have been from her heyday as the queen of disco.timeless 10/10

"slide over backwards" has a tina turner feel to it..i think tina could do it better as its got a raw country feel and doesn't suit donna 6/10

"science of love" .its has echoes of some great eighties tracks by asia, toto and the like..it doesn't sound dated and it a great track 9/10

"be myself again" is a big ballad..with great lyrics perfect for donna 10/10

"bring down the reign" has african vibes over a great track..big on atmosphere and a stunning end to a stunning album!

this is a donna classic...vocally perfect...great choice of songs...i have all her albums and its probably her most solid output ever!

THE QUEEN IS BACK!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best since Bad Girls album!, 30 May 2008
Please, please, please, buy this album if you you've ever enjoyed a Donna Summer track as it's the best thing she's done since 1979's classic Bad Girls. I know - everything she did in the interim was just a tad banal and arbitrary, but this is the true return to form of a legendary performer and songwriter. The only reason it's getting four instead of five stars at the moment is that it'll have a bit of a way to go yet before it can compete with some of the iconic music this woman has produced. (And if people get on board, she may actually come over to the UK to play!)
