Review
Donna Summer returns with an album that truly is a fine encapsulation of her career to date: a pinch of dance, some frothy pop; a power ballad or two, all given a 2008 sheen. Summer is keen to prove that she is no disco relic: Hers is the world of American Idol and the contemporary charts. Crayons is her first album of original material for 17 years. And it owes more to her golden Casablanca era as opposed to her last recorded work as the 80s became the 90s. Although her record company wanted an album of covers, Summer surprised them by her desire to record original material, inspired by her love of James Blunt's You're Beautiful (I kid you not).
Although it is far removed from her high-period Giorgio Moroder work, it's much better than even the die-hards could be expecting. The Queen Is Back is typical of much here; big, bold and impactful; I'm A Fire is the album's centre, while opener Stamp Your Feet is pure Gwen Stefani; Summer may not be a Hollerback girl, but she sure sounds like it. Musically, Christina Aguilera is referenced also on the title track.
Driving Down Brazil is enough to make a smooth radio programme froth at the mouth. It's Only Love is the show-stopper, full of the insouciance of the final side of Bad Girls as it closes the album.
The planet seems to be ready for her. In the US, the album has debuted within the Top 20, and I'm A Fire has topped the dance charts. It's good to have her back, sounding quite so contemporary; or, at the very least, like an approximation of what Donna Summer sounding contemporary would sound like. --Daryl Easlea

I've been a Donna Summer fan since the 1970s so I awaited this album with much excitement. It might have been too much to expect Donna's first new studio album in 17 years to live up to expectations..... but it does and them some.
I have to admire Donna for standing by her principles and insisting on doing an album of new contempory music rather than going down the covers album road that so many other artists of her era have gone down. Donna has co-written all of the tracks on this album and many of them could be hit singles given the right push by a record company. Tracks like 'Stamp Your Feet', 'The Queen is Back','I'm A Fire' and 'Drivin Down Brazil' would sit very comfortably next to her classic hits from the 1970s and 1980s.
Donna has already taken this album into the Billboard top 20 and has once again topped the billboard dance chart at the age of 59! This album deserves to be a big success the world over and fans from the past should have no hesitation in adding it to their collections.

If you're into monotonous music, this album is not for you.
Donna Summer, the great Donna Summer, may be universally known as "the Queen of disco" but, let's face it, she's one of the most flexible and versatile singers in the world - and has always been (just think of her 5 Grammys won in 4 different categories).
On CRAYONS each song is like a different color (and musical genre). Pop, dance, rock, R&B, samba, ballads: Donna can sing them all - and sing them great!
Her voice sounds as good as always, her music has the power to entertain and make feel good.
Personal favorites include: I'M A FIRE, STAMP YOUR FEET, THE QUEEN IS BACK, FAME (THE GAME), SAND ON MY FEET, BE MYSELF AGAIN and BRING DOWN THE REIGN.
