Right, to the point - a 50% review for a simple product (would give 2 and half stars but rounded up for cheap cost!)
Baby's 'readiness' aside, these are not "ideal" as described - they're basic crayons; you can find better alternatives for early mark making. To summarise:
Pros:
These are from a reputable brand - so presumably parents can be reassured of safety (even if ingested)
Good value, especially as you may need to replace / stock up if you like them
A simple but good range of colours
Good size for a stocking filler or small gift - maybe party bags?
Cons:
They do not last well
They can VERY easily be nibbled and ends snapped - as exemplified by a baby from 1yr and toddler of 2yrs
Although small and chunky, they have no grip - no paper, no sleeve, no shaping - so as such can become slippy in little hands - hence not exactly "ideal"
The lack of any covering means its not just the tip and top that are open to bites, but the sides too
The description of "perfect", "the best creative start", "ideal" and "value-added art product(s)" lead purchasers to believe these are more than they actually are, as proved by other products (which actually come much closer to these statements).
Although more expensive we found that chunky pencils were great from about 10months+ (rec. from 1yr+):
they have lasted longer,
are easier to hold (stay in grasp longer)
and have produced excellent results; encouraging fine motor skills to a much better degree (rather than so much of the teeth and jaw skills!).
Young babies can therefore begin to explore their creative skills - they are 'ready' to explore from as soon as they can hold it!
These were from a leading children's toy shop and a different brand, crayola do similar which will no doubt be as fitting and an excellent alternative.
From this, and our experience, buy to try but for longer-lasting and more creative results, it's worth spending a bit more.

great crayons, my son who is 2 loves these, they are easy for him to hold and the don't snap like the smaller after five minutes. my 8 year old daughter likes using them aswell as there are a few colours there for them to choose from, great product, i highly recommend this product for any budding artist.

Great chunky, bright crayons. My 18 month old girl loves drawing with them and for the amount I bought them at it is well worth it to see the hours of pleasure she has.

Excellent crayons for litte chubby fingers. strong durable thick crayons that are easily held. They give good strong colour transfer too, unlike cheaper crayons. love them x

Very good for younger children
