I first heard of H.P. Lovecraft when the PC game "Alone In The Dark" came out. The game was about a detective exploring an ancient house and discovering it haunted by all sorts of spirits, monsters, devil worshippers and the sort.
The feeling of the game was very scary indeed and I was curious to see that it had been based on the works of a certain H.P. Lovecraft.
From that time onward, I've seen references to Lovecraft on other PC games, always with the same oppressing and really scary feeling.
I bought this book hoping to know a bit more about the writer's work and I wasn't disappointed. This is a compilation of Lovecraft's works, spanning everything from his first, "lesser" works to the grandiose and superbely written last tales (not forgetting the Cthulhu mythos, well represented by some fine tales).
What I found more interesting on the book was to be able to see how Lovecraft's writing evolved in time. It's really nice to compare his first tales with the last - you have for instance, a chance to compare "Dagon", one of his first stories, with "Shadow Over Innsmouth", a Cthulhu-tale witch took the idea behind "Dagon" and gave it a new development.
All in all, this is a great book to introduce new readers to the amazing work of this writer and also a superb chance to analyse his evolution through the years.
