Product Description

Synopsis

H P Lovecraft, one of the greatest obsessive writers of the 20th century, naturally chose the pulp genre of 'weird horror' in which to exorcise his acute anatomical alienation and existential torment. An indispensable chronological collection of this unique writer's best work; from his distinctive collaborative pieces, prose-poems and early tales of the gruesome and bizarre, through to maturation and efflorescence of his personal cosmology, the Cthulhu Mythos. With an introduction by Colin Wilson, Crawling Chaos is essential to the library of every horror/ fantasy fan.

I purchased 'Crawling Chaos' in the hope of being provided with a solid introduction to H.P. Lovecraft's work, having never read any of his works before.
What I was presented with did not disappoint. The introduction eases you into the history of the editor, and the man himself before you are presented with a cross-section of his work.
Each story is presented beautifully on high quality paper, dual-columned on each page. In addition, every story has its year of publication stated beneath the title. In fact, it becomes very interesting to see the different dates and note the evolution of Lovecraft as a writer.
This book can't help but chill you and pervade into your subconscious. Certain stories such as 'The Hound' and 'The Dunwich Horror' will remain with you for some time. Lovecraft was sometimes derided as Poe's understudy, but in reading this book you realise he was a master in his own right.
The only word of warning I have is this; if you haven't read Lovecraft before you must be prepared to go through some fairly heavy language. Given the age of the work and the verbose nature of his writings, going through one of his tales can seem laborious. Yet, it is this slow building of pace, and the ultimate rewards of creepiness and phantasmagorical violence that make Lovecraft's writings some of the most intriguing, and disturbing, of his age.
So treat yourself to a taster of the writings of one of the greatest horror writers of the 20th century, providing you can afford the sleepness nights.

A fine selection of Lovecraft's works, presenting a good summary of Lovecraft's entire career. The creepy Cthulhu tales are present as you would expect, but the clincher for me is the inclusion of Herbert West: Reanimator, the funniest horror story I've ever read. I would recommend this one over the other Lovecraft collections if you're new to the man and his works.

I first heard of H.P. Lovecraft when the PC game "Alone In The Dark" came out. The game was about a detective exploring an ancient house and discovering it haunted by all sorts of spirits, monsters, devil worshippers and the sort.
The feeling of the game was very scary indeed and I was curious to see that it had been based on the works of a certain H.P. Lovecraft.

From that time onward, I've seen references to Lovecraft on other PC games, always with the same oppressing and really scary feeling.

I bought this book hoping to know a bit more about the writer's work and I wasn't disappointed. This is a compilation of Lovecraft's works, spanning everything from his first, "lesser" works to the grandiose and superbely written last tales (not forgetting the Cthulhu mythos, well represented by some fine tales).

What I found more interesting on the book was to be able to see how Lovecraft's writing evolved in time. It's really nice to compare his first tales with the last - you have for instance, a chance to compare "Dagon", one of his first stories, with "Shadow Over Innsmouth", a Cthulhu-tale witch took the idea behind "Dagon" and gave it a new development.

All in all, this is a great book to introduce new readers to the amazing work of this writer and also a superb chance to analyse his evolution through the years.
