4.0 out of 5 stars A great young adult paranormal romance 23 April 2012
By Hannah
Format:Paperback
The first thing I want to talk about is the cover of Crave. Despite the girl on the front looking nothing like the image I have in my head of Savannah, and it being (let's face it) a fairly generic young adult paranormal romance cover, I adore it. I know the UK cover (pictured) isn't too different from the US edition but I just find those subtle differences enough to make it a stand out cover. The red and black is a nice contrast and the red leaves around the edges are foil embossed. It's lovely.

As for the novel itself, I really enjoyed it. I was quite pleasantly surprised by Crave as I didn't expect anything entirely different from any other young adult paranormal romance, and I suppose in a lot of ways it wasn't, but the writing style pulled it up into a world of its' own and I loved it. It is most definitely a gripping read and I adored the witchy elements in The Clann, and also Savannah's half-witch, half-vampire genetic heritage. It's a lot of fun discovering everything as Savannah does.

There are a lot of rather "meh" reviews around for Crave and because I'd seen so many, I had been put off a little from trying it for myself, and I suppose the issues these others have pointed out were present, however, I enjoyed it a lot and I may have missed out on a great read. My issues were with Savannah herself. The two perspective story telling method which varied between Savannah and Tristan's viewpoints worked really well. They gave us a look into each character's mind as we follow the developing romance between the two of them. Tristen I liked a lot as a character, but Savannah is one of those female characters that just doesn't seem to have her head screwed on quite right. I kept wanting to shout at my book and tell her to just talk to people.

4.0 out of 5 stars an exciting, tear jerker 19 Feb 2014
Format:Paperback
Review by Cerys - Year 7

Crave is a teen romance novel mixed with fantasy, where the main character Savannah discovers that she is not only half witch but also half vampire. There is only one rule; she isn’t allowed to date the heir to the witches’ clan, Tristan Coleman. Savannah has to push her feelings aside and think for her family’s safety, but how long can she stand this?

At first, I wasn’t that interested and I felt like the start dragged on a bit. But as I got deeper into the story I began to really feel for the characters and felt like I understood them. The story switches between Tristan and Savannah and both of their opinions are expressed so you get to see the two sides of the story. This makes the book more interesting to read.

Savannah takes the role of the strong female character that never backs out of a fight, but is confused about her feelings and never knows who she should support, her mum or her dad. Melissa Darnell has the ability to make the reader hooked on a certain character and take a side in many of the debates and fights this book contains. She manages to give you a real insight to the characters which not only have to struggle with the normal teenage issues but also the fact that they’re supernatural humans.

My only dislike about the book is that I felt it cast some of the main characters out and just slipped them in to some of the most important events. She could have given them a few more characteristics as well as perhaps giving them a story behind them.

I would definitely like to read another book by this author because I would like to see if she writes any other styles of books. I also really enjoyed this book and I would like to see if any of her other books are as gripping as this one in particular was.

3.0 out of 5 stars For a big book not a lot happens 10 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought this book was good I like the characters and I like the idea of a half witch half vampire but a whole lot of the book drag on and was just too slow for me. I feel that the book was drag on because the author wanted to get a other book in. It is worth reading especially if you liked Twilight but I won't be getting the second book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great YA Paranormal Romance. 21 July 2013
By Sarah
Format:Paperback
(Source: I own a copy of this book.)
15-year-old Savanna has never been ill before, but when her temperature soars, and she feels sick she knows something is wrong, what she didn't expect was to be told by her mother that it's because she's half witch, and half vampire!
Now that her abilities have started to come out, it's even more important than ever that Savanna stay away from the kids of the other witch families in town, because her vampire half could crave the power that they have, and bring out her blood lust. Problem is that Savanna has secretly been in love with the son of the head of the witch clan for as long as she can remember, and now he's starting to pay her attention too.
Savanna tries to hide what she is from Tristan, but sometimes it's not that easy.
Is Savanna destined to become a vampire? When will Tristan discover that she's half vampire? And is there any hope of a real lasting relationship for Tristan and Savanna?

This was a great YA paranormal romance, and shows promise for the rest of the series.

Savanna was a great character, and I couldn't help but feel for her - not only did she have to cope with her unusual heritage, but she was also told that she was never allowed to use magic, or to behave like a vampire, at risk of starting a war!! And was also stopped from doing something that she truly loved - dancing, because her vampire powers made her too good at it, which would be suspicious! This really did seem very unfair to Savanna though, she didn't really get any of the benefits of being a vampire or a witch!
I also liked Tristan. It was sweet how he looked out for Savanna, and kept finding little ways to show her that he cared about her, and wanted something real with her.
