Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Eat Static desperately want to be seen as a hardcore, cutting-edge techno outfit. But for all their wanting, their heart isn't really in it. The bongo bursts, the horn outbreaks and the full-blown Latino flavours of "Nocturnal Umbra" and "Mondo A Go-Go!" (all surf guitars, hip-swaying percussion and sensational Sixties horns) make them too much fun for the techno scene, and "Mondo'"s sudden break beats, which gag for a rap, just don't fit into the four-to-the-floor picture. Crash And Burn! is an electronica homage, a pop explosion, a retro-experiment and an Austin Powers-wannabe groove attack, with a few poe-faced worthy tunes thrown in so that duo Merv Pepler and Joie Hinton will be taken seriously. The point they miss is that, like the United Future Organisation and the Propellerheads (whose Will White is a guest collaborator), they sound best when aping the Sixties spy movie sound tracks and like the aforementioned Mr. Powers, when not taking themselves too seriously. --Dan Gennoe

Eat Static, best known for their alien explorations in previous albums, bring their b-movie sonic mayhem a little closer to Earth. They experiment with sounds and beats which are a distinct departure from their 4-on-the-floor techno of years past-- Latino rhythms and instruments being the most prominent example. Don't let the idea turn you off, though - every piece of the sonic palette is as mind-bending as ever. Listening to classic Static synth squiggles overlap with Latin trumpet blasts is a strange and wonderful experience. ES dramatically takes their sound to another level here, and they prove that serious electronic music can be fun at the same time.

I can only assume the Amazon reviewer wants a job at Smash-Hits. The customer reviews tell the story. The whole point of this album is a move away from 'hardcore, cutting-edge techno'. There are gorgeous, uplifting strings in here, rattling tom-toms, cynical, crazy lyrics. Eat Static are having fun, exploring their roots a little bit and bringing across styles usually associated with totally different schools. Theres even moments of jazz. Its still electronic, with breakbeats and bass, but this album is mostly about bringing new flavours to techno. Dont forget, Eat Static are basically Ozric Tentacles, and at the end of the day, they are excellent musicians. This album is some of the evidence.

Crash'N'Burn is a marvelous CD full of drive and energy, bright sound and great compositions. Somewhere between Lounge, Dance, Synth Band and Exotica Eat Static will get my attention at Glastonbury this year and long may they deliver leading edge Lounge worthy of Tipsy, Les Baxter and Martin Denny.
