Product Description

Action thriller starring Jason Statham as ace hitman Chev Chelios, who learns that he has been injected with a poison that will kill him if his heart rate drops below a certain point. Racing against time and against his own body, Chev must keep up the pressure as he tracks down the men responsible and exact his violent revenge.

Action anti-hero Jason Statham is competing with himself to make the most relentless, non-stop action flick imaginable. In Crank, Statham stars as a hit man named Chev Chelios who's been poisoned by some Chinese toxin; the only way to stave it off is to keep his adrenalin flowing, which requires him to drive at top speeds through crowded traffic, start fights in bars, and run pell-mell down hospital corridors while wearing one of those humiliating smocks that tie in the back. In other words, Crank is high-end pop-trash, filled with many preposterous/ingenious stunts and over-the-top performances (Dwight Yoakam, Sling Blade, is downright droll as a doctor offering Chev assistance), marred by an unpleasant attitude towards women (Amy Smart, Outside Providence, will not look back on this as one of her signature roles). This is a movie for the audience who enjoyed Transporter and Transporter 2 but wanted Statham's perpetual scowl to become a kind of theatrical mask, a perpetual signifier of intensity that begs--nay, demands--that everything around it rise to a mutual level of absurdity. Fans of Luc Besson (Leon/The Professional, District 13) will find Crank to be simpatico. --Bret Fetzer

Even if few things in this film make any sense, I simply can't rate it less than five stars, because I had sooooo much fun watching it...)))))))) Below, more of my impressions, with some SPOILERS.

Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) is a hit man who one day wakes up and realises that he was injected with "Beijing Coctail", a deadly poison which is very quickly killing him - in fact he has only minutes left to live! There remains however one chance for him to survive - as long as he manages to keep his adrenaline level very high, the poisoning doesn't progress and therefore he may have a chance to find an antidote. But if he lets his adrenaline level drop to a regular level, he is dead meat...

What follows is 90 minutes of a tough guy running through the city, frequently half naked, with a raging erection poorly hidden from the public view. During this time he will get into an incredible number of fights and incidents, kill numerous bad guys, frighten countless women, snort coke, pilfer hospital supplies, cause vehicle accidents, commit robberies, start fires, abuse a defibrilator, horribly insult ethnic and sexual minorities, have VERY public sex with Amy Smart, hold surrealistic phone conversations with his doctor, confront Triads, LAPD, nuns, street gangs, Japanese tourists, etc., all to the appropriately fast paced rhytm of an AMAZING soundtrack!

WARNING: the kind of humour displayed in this film will probably mostly appeal to men... Also, the amount of verbal obscenities is such that some DVD players may not support it...)))

I am the first to admit that this whole film is just a surrealistic exercise in accelerated nonsense - but GOSH, DID I HAVE GOOD TIME WATCHING IT! If you feel a little bit down, get some beer and this film and just start watching - no matter how bad you feel before, this film WILL cheer you up! Enjoy!

I feel I need to write a positive review looking at the list of abuse this has been subjected to!

I can't understand how so many people hated this film. Yeah, it's daft, but come on, how many action films don't have a credibility stretching premise? (Face Off, The Rock, Gone in 60 Seconds, all of the Mission Impossible films etc).

I sat and watched this with my partner last night and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. It pretty much runs in real time, and doesn't let up from start to finish. Jason Statham does exactly what you want (and expect) of him, with his perpetual scowl and well delivered one liners. There was a nice thread of humour throughout, and some fun characters (the dead-pan doctor was a nice touch).

Lighten up people, and get a sense of humour.

It always amuses me when people go see a movie and comment on it not being something that it never intended to be. If you want believable storylines and actions, character development and seriousness then you'd never come and watch this movie to begin with.

Crank is an all out actionfest film, a thrillride from beginning to end. Yes there's unrealistic events, yes there's moments that are downright amusing, but it does what it says on the tin. We're not talking The Shawshank Redemption here people.

Statham plays his typical Lock Stock/Transporter style which fits this film perfectly. Basically it's action at 200mph from beginning to end with some fantastic camerawork and some great moments which you can't help but enjoy. Sure there are some scenes (especially coming towards the end but I won't leave any spoilers) that look a bit dodgy, but I think we can forgive that for this type of film.

Personally I loved it. If you want an all out action packed film full of stunts, women and a few laughs then you can't go wrong with this. If you want character driven thoughtfulness then look elsewhere. All I can say is, send the mrs out, get the mates round, crack open a few beers, whack this on and prepare to be entertained.

Chev Chelios is an assassin working for the West Coast crime syndicate.

But things are about to get very bad, when he learns he has been injected with a poison called "The Beijing Cocktail" by his rival, which will kill him if his heart rate drops.

Trying to stay alive and seeking help from friend, Kaylo and Doc Miles, and to keep his heart pumping, Chev sets out to find answers as well as protecting Eve his girlfriend.

But his ulterior motive is to get his revenge on those who have betrayed him before the poison kills him......

It's as high concept as high concept can get, and I'm sure the pitch by Neveldine and Taylor was, 'it's Speed, but in the human body'. And the reason why it works? It's because its way over the top, bonkers, and constantly winking at the audience.

In anyone else's hands, this would have been a straight thriller, directed by Tony Scott (RIP) and starring Denzel Washington. Sure, it would have had the stark visuals, but it wouldn't have that element of absurdity this film has.

And this is the films winning formula, absurdity. Referencing retro video games, and unsubtle hints and GTA, crank is 'cranked' up on all scales, from acting, soundtrack, narrative, visuals, and of course Statham.

Never before has he starred a film that could not have had anyone else in his role.

So all in all, you'll either like this film or hate it, but you'll definitely experience it....
