Product Description

Product Description

"Cranford" is the best known and most charming of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels. It is a comic portrait of an early Victorian country village and its genteel inhabitants, mostly women, whose social attitudes remain firmly unchanging against the modernising world, and whose domestic details dominate conversation. Gaskell describes the uneventful lives of Cranford's inhabitants in this witty and poignant classic which deserves to be read and re-read.

About the Author

Elizabeth Stevenson was born in London in 1810. In 1832 she married the minister William Gaskell and moved to Manchester. The death of her only son inspired her to write her first novel, Mary Barton, which was published anonymously in 1848. Dickens invited her to contribute to his magazine Household Words where her Cranford stories appeared from 1851 to 1853. She also wrote the novels Ruth, North and South and Sylvia's Lovers, and the famous biography, The Life of Charlotte Bronte. Elizabeth Gaskell died in 1865, leaving her final work Wives and Daughters incomplete.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cranford, 14 Feb 2008
By Donna Mcmanus "donnamcmanus" (London) - See all my reviews

I bought this after seeing the wonderful series on BBC 1 staring Judy Dench, Imelda Staunton, Michael Gambon and so many others.

It is never a good idea to read the book before or after watching something dramatised - either on TV or film and I suppose this is no different. (The book is usually far superior!) You can't help comparing it to the characters from Cranford on BBC 1! Quite a few things are different - notably the stories are told very much separately and not intertwined as they were on BBC 1. Also Mr Harrison's story (where he gets mixed up with 3 women) and Lady Ludlow's story aren't even set in Cranford but in another northern town. However - this is as Elizabeth Gaskell wrote it and her style of writing is a pleasure to read. I have to admit I enjoyed the TV series more.

This is well worth it if you enjoyed the TV series but also if you didn't see it and want to dip into the Cranford Chronicles by starting with these lovely stories. As the above reviewer states this book includes Cranford, The Cage at Cranford, Mr Harrisons Confessions and My Lady Ludlow.

3.0 out of 5 stars This book includes all of the source material for the TV series, 12 Dec 2007

This isn't really a review because I haven't read the book.

However, I bought it because I was looking for a version to include "Cranford", "My Lady Ludlow" and "Mr Harrison's Confessions" which are the 3 works used as source for the TV series. Failing to find such a book on Amazon I decided to start with this one.

Now that I has arrived I can see that all 3 works ARE included - together with an extra story "The Cage at Cranford". It is bizarre that this isn't made clear when you buy the book!

3.0 out of 5 stars The original version..........., 6 April 2009
By Stephen Bishop (Darlington, England) - See all my reviews

This contains the basic story of Cranford, told by Mary Smith and set mainly round her relations with Mattie. As such it is the core of the TV series, which also had added in elements from the other stories in the collection, especially Dr Harrison and Lady ludlow. The main interest is to see how these elements have been woven pretty cleverly into one homogenous series for TV, requiring a degree of adaptation far greater than usually exercised. A few of the editorial decisions seem a bit inexplicable, but it's interesting how certain characters have their importance increased or diminished compared with the original to achieve a more even effect. Overall, the transformation is fairly impressive and I don't think objectionable because the original works are far slighter than, say, 'Wives and Daughters'
