Book Description

3 Jun 2013
CRAIG BELLAMY is one of those footballers you can t ignore. If he plays for your team, you love him. If he doesn t . . . Everyone knows Bellamy. Pace and passion. A handful for defenders. Scoring goals and winding up opponents. Winning friends and making enemies. Blessed with a natural talent, he has enjoyed a colourful career at a host of top clubs. The proud Welshman is one of the top ten appearance makers for his country. But his rise to the top of the game wasn t easy. It could have all been so different. He came from a loving family but there were temptations in his way. Follow the crowd or follow a dream? Join your mates in a gang on the streets or try to make it as a pro? It was a choice between the two. Bellamy chose football and became a rebel with a cause. He quickly climbed the ladder and shared dressing rooms with some of the biggest stars in football from Ryan Giggs to Steven Gerrard. His burning desire to succeed made him a winner on the pitch, but that same passion also got him into trouble. He earned hero status at Newcastle for his Player of the Season performances, but controversy soon followed after a chair throwing incident involving the first team coach, a public bust-up with Graeme Souness and a telephone text scandal with Alan Shearer. Later, he joined his boyhood heroes Liverpool where he would score a famous goal against Barcelona in the Nou Camp, days after striking his team-mate John Arne Riise with a golf club after a karaoke night. He enjoyed further success at high-flying Manchester City where he was caught on TV slapping the face of a pitch invader. A second term at Liverpool and other spells at West Ham, Celtic, Blackburn Rovers, Coventry, Norwich and his hometown team Cardiff have been equally eventful. Away from the spotlight, however, there is a very different side to Craig Bellamy. His earnings from this book will be going to the Craig Bellamy Foundation, a charity that he is passionate about which offers children in Sierra Leone the chance to fulfill their sporting potential. He is a devoted Dad and was heartbroken at the tragic and shocking death of his close friend Gary Speed. Craig Bellamy: GoodFella, is a no-holds barred, often surprising whistlestop ride through a football career in the fast lane. Like the man himself, it won t hold back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good 12 Jun 2013

This a good and honest biography with, thankfully no repetition to pad it out.
Written in a tight format. He's very kind to Souness but I still can't stand Chop Souey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising 19 Oct 2013

Never really liked Bellamy, he's a controversial figure and he doesn't hold back in this book. But it's an exceptional read. Never read a more honest and open autobiography. Best footballers book I've ever read. It's a man coming to terms with being a man and not a daft footballer living in a bubble.

Sport will always have its heroes; and it will also always have its villains. Often the dividing-line between the two is only about public perception, about one individual who is idolised and another who is vilified. In the sport of football there have always been men the crowd loves to hate ... an Eric Cantona, a David Batty, a Joey Barton; men who are usually lauded by the supporters of the club they play for yet disparaged by everyone else's supporters. Possibly Craig Bellamy falls into the same category. But is it really fair to judge a man purely by what you have read or heard about him ? No, it is clearly not right to do that. Because the man has a right of reply. He has the right to give his own side of the story. He has the right to prove that the public's perception was wrong.

Craig Bellamy has had more clubs than most and that is not including the number eight iron he once used to attract John Arne Riise's attention! Of the eight different clubs in the English Premier League or Football League that he has played for, only at Norwich City, Newcastle United and West Ham United did his stay last two seasons or more. However, having helped his hometown club rise into the top division of the English league system for the first time in fifty-one years, it is unthinkable that he will not have one final swan song in the Premier League. Achieving promotion with Cardiff City was one of his proudest moments : "I always wanted to be a hero here more than anywhere else".

At Coventry City, Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool (twice) Bellamy moved on after just twelve months. If outsiders thought this was because he was a disruptive influence and had fallen out with a club's hierarchy, that is far from the truth. Each time he moved on ...

4.0 out of 5 stars a great read 6 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this insight into the life of Craig. A very honest book describing a very troubled and tormented man. He talks with such passion about his career and the people he has crossed paths with and the impact the death of Gary Speed had on him and how it turned his own life around. As a Cardiff City supporter I enjoyed it.

Frank attitude and honesty. I think Craig was a layer who perhaps should achieved more because of his a biology but injuries got in the way.
I didn't dislike anything only skipped through the Olympic stuff because that is personal thing in the full scope of achievement that doesn't matter. International football doesn't matter for the reader only club football is personal and you can relate to it although I do expect it to be mentioned.
