Review

This is a really great book. It has plans for a couple of sleds for the table saw and 18 puzzles. It has materials lists, easy to use instructions with solutions to all puzzles and lots of helpful tips. Highly Recommended --S smith

This book has proved to provide both interesting and in some cases challenging wood working exercises. The resulting puzzles are a big hit with friends and family - the hints for presents are mounting. Its also a great way to use up all those scraps of wood I've been hording but haven't been able to use. --Adrian Iredale

a great buy 11 Feb 2010
By J. Buck
Format:Paperback
I love this book, the drawings and instructions are clear and easy to follow. All of these should be not be a problem to make, for anybody with basic woodworking skills. Some of them are simply multiples of blocks glued together,so are really easy to make.
Not made all of them yet, but I will eventually. The items I have made are great fun. I enjoyed making them as much as I enjoy using them.

This is a marvellous little book, I've always found geometric puzzles interesting and this has proved to be a very good entry point in to making my own. (Don't expect to be creating chinese puzzle boxes straight off)

The book starts by covering some of the tools and techniques required to make the puzzles. You don't need all the kit it describes but doing it all by hand will take longer and be much harder to get right. The jigs described for the table saw are perhaps the most obvious example - essential stuff and obvious once seen!

The 18 puzzles cover knot problems, 2D & 3D tesselation and interlocking puszzles (burrs). Each puzzle is clearly laid out with a picture of the finished puzzle, a brief overview of the concept and clear instructions for construction. The cutting lists are complete and clear - some of the interlocks I re-drew simply for my own understanding. The puzzle solutions are shown at the end of the book and are similarly clear and concise.

My only issue is that all of the measurements are in imperial units (inches) - I know the reasons for this but I've grown up with metric and not all the puzzle instructions easily convert, some really are better done in imperial. I'll not hold this against the book tho'.

Expect to run a few prototypes through before committing your best wood to the puzzle - and the more you do the better they get.

I've been collecting old furniture as a source of wood - it's great to give these puzzles away at almost no cost beyond the time spent in creating them. I'm already on the lookout for some new puzzle designs.

wood puzzles 4 Dec 2008
By Karl T. Newcomer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I've made three puzzles so far. Making them is a bit of a puzzle in itself, as you can imagine. All were done using a bandsaw. They all worked. I did'nt have to redue anything, so the plans were acurate. I made the twenty minute puzzle first and passed a few to freinds and family. I was surprized with the response. They could'nt leave them alone. So far, this book has been well worth it.
