Product Description

"Intensely cute..."--"Publishers Weekly..."Quirky and the projects are super easy."--""..."It caught our attention."--"The Huffington Post--"You may think kitties are only good for getting hair all over your favorite chair and eating more kibble than you thought possible but "Crafting with Cat Hair" will show you how to turn cat hair into mittens, tote bags, book covers and more."--"" --""Personal "projects that celebrate your cat and they look as cute as can be!"--"Neatorama"--" "--"Put those furballs to work for YOU!"--"Suvudu"It's bizarre, to be sure, but the appliques are kind of cute, too. This is a good one for your cat-loving crafty friends (and you know you have them)." --"Austin American Statesman"--Bonkers but Brilliant.... --Dales Life, December, 2011

It is in a neat 19 cm by 20 cm paperback format and is packed to the brim with cute kitty photos - which you would expect of course but being another cat obsessive, it is fun seeing a craft book dedicated to kitty cats! The book is based around felting techniques with the cat hair. There are ten projects and most of them use needle felting to decorate a felt or woollen item with an image of a cat. A couple of them, such as making a cat hair finger puppet and the project where you apply the finger puppet to a felt box, use a wet felting technique. You get help and instruction for both these techniques, although you may need some previous experience of felting with fur or at least some crafty common sense as some of the instructions are a little short. As Kaori herself points out, cat hair isn't quite like sheep wool so it is good for decorating projects but you would not be able to make a usable bag from it for example. Some of the projects include a decorated coin purse, some really cute kitty badges and kitty cat portraits, and some great scarf, hat and glove decorations. All projects come with step-by-step instructions and some come with pictures to help you with some of the stages. The book's greatest strength is in the details of how to groom and care for your cat with an aim to collect cat hair and have a happy, well-groomed cat of course! It answers some of your catty questions from what to do about pests, when the best time to harvest cat hair is and to how to look after the projects you have decorated with the cat hair. There are patterns, materials lists and handy tips throughout. I loved the section where you get to meet the cat hair contributors - cute touch! --Craftymakes, December, 2011

the author guides us on a creative journey that teaches readers how to adorn such items as badges, hats, pincushions, tote bags and even portraits. If you have an aboundance of cat hair you're not sure what to do with, this could be the stocking filler for you! --The Cat Magazine, December, 2011

From the publishers who gave us Meowmorphosis, another wierd and wonderful book... --Cat Care, Winter 2011

4.0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life 17 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Are you a crazy cat lady? Have you got far too much spare time on your hands? Do you want to learn how to make a creepy finger puppet (akin to something a serial killer might make from his victim's hair) out of your pets shed fur? Then you're in luck! This book is exactly what you're looking for!!

I was once like you. I used to sit in front of my telly box with my three cats(Prometheus, Socrates and Nigel), wondering how to fill my days, between shouting at rain and sorting through my collection of old Smash Hits magazines, all the while having no idea what to do with the 17 burlap sacks filled with cat hair going to waste in my shed. That is until I stumbled across this book...

Now I fill my days creating wonderful finger puppets from genuine cat fur and I have the pleasure of sharing my hobby with the world. I show my creations to strangers on the bus (although I'm quite unlucky in that I always decide to show my puppets to people who are getting off at the next stop), I've opened up an a web store selling my original creations ([...] - check it out!), I started a cat hair puppet show (although the police have warned me about it) and they make fantastic gifts for all the most important people in my life, like my therapist, my parole officer and the man I sometimes talk to in the supermarket whose name may or may not be Jim.

So buy this book and you to can turn your life around!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleased I bought this 29 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this product because I was looking for books on needle felting and there is a review on Amazon that made me laugh so much as it was taking the pee, that I bought the book. It's actually a really informative book and I love the instruction that specifies "do not shave your cat" so there is no lion cut in store for my raggamuffin puss. Some cute ideas that bemuse my son and I and encourage him to groom the cats more often so he has cat fur to craft with.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tries hard, novelty don't justify a whole book 13 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The book gives one project that is all cat hair (the finger doll on the cover), and then shows how to put a cat hair cat-figure on 9 other projects. I thought this was disappointing and wondered why there weren't more "real" cat hair projects (like rings, bracelets and other small items).

The answer is given on page 41: "[cat] hairs do not entangle well, and if you apply any sort of pressure, a hole will open up. It doesn't have the strength or durability to make any sort of practical item, but it does work well for small designs, mascots or decorations". It goes on to say that even the cat-figure projects need to be treated really carefully so they won't be damaged.

So the "use cat hair!" idea is funny, and would have been a fun single project in a book, but it is not enough to make a whole book on it own. To compensate for this, the book tries really hard to get sympathy by plenty cute cat pictures with speech bubbles, fact about fur/grooming, and profiles of the fur-donating cats. But if I wanted a cute cat book, I would buy a cute cat book and not a craft book.

So all in all, the book is short on useful content, but hard-core cat lovers will love it anyway (it has cats in it).

3.0 out of 5 stars cat hair craft 28 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book was not exactly what I expected. As a cat owner there are lots of hair when I groom them and thought this book would give me some ideas. Actually this book should have been called Felting with Cat Hair.

4.0 out of 5 stars A few good projects 6 Dec 2011
By Kat
I was a little disappointed in this book, I must say -- it essentially shows you how to make a felted cat, then gives you projects to apply that same felted cat to. I was hoping there'd be other uses for cat hair (such as spinning it into yarn, for example), but I guess that must be coming in book two?

Nonetheless, it's a lovely read for a very niche topic, and the cats included in the book are really cute.

Yes, I admit I thought it was joke at first, but its real. The book is a great craft book with step by step projects using fabric, paper and card. By brushing your cat the surplus fur can be incorporated into these cat inspired designs. Its not as mad as it sounds. for example by using felting techniques, you can add a little cat logo to the end of your scarf. Simple to do and very personal.

Apart from being a good craft book, the book is also a great gift for any cat lover. The author is clearly cat mad and throughout the book there is lot about her own cats and their behaviour, accompanied by lovely photographs. There are as many cat care tips as there are crafting ones. So a nice read as well as practical projects and inspiration.

My partner makes hand made greetings cards, and we have three cats. Everything I own is covered in cat fur....including myself! So this book was an obvious gift for her.

Highly recommended.

Bought as a gift for someone with a cat that looses a lot of hair. Not sure it everything in it will get made but it does seem quite practical.
