5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry demystified 27 Sep 2011
The Craft of Writing Poetry by Alison Chisholm does just what it says on the tin! The book teaches the reader, step by step, that poetry is a craft and not purely the domain of the esoteric intelligentsia. It is written in clear precise language that guides the pupil through the various processes that make a poem. It covers both free verse, a number of set forms and provides many exercises to act as triggers for poems. The motto of Liverpool poet Adrian Henry was, `If you think you can do it and you want to do it, then do it!' this book provides the inspiration to do just that!

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful and cheaper than a course. 19 April 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a useful book for any hobby poet. However although the exercises are interesting as they help you build up your skills and confidence it feels from much as though one is working through the author's course notes. Alison Chisholm is a tutor for the well known correspondence school the Writer's Bureau and the book has a slightly sterile classroom feel about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST "how to" book for beginners. 4 Dec 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This book is by far the best, most sympathetic, encouraging and stimulating book for the beginning poet that I have yet come across. It, and its companion volume - "A Practical Poetry Course" take the reader step by step through the various stages of learning to write good poetry. She keeps the technical details simple and accessible, and manages to keep an overall feeling of enjoyment and pleasure in the task at hand.

I personally owe this book and this author a huge debt of gratitude. I can think of no better gift for the person who likes writing poetry and is beginning to feel that maybe they should/could take it further, if only they knew how ...
