Product Description

Product Description

Natural dyeing is an ancient craft which was practised by most early civilizations. With increased awareness of environmental issues, this guide to natural dyeing will not only provide the craftsperson with an alternative to synthetic dyes, but is designed to encourage a resurgence of this traditional skill. The book contains instructions on: how to plan and grow your own dye garden; how to prepare plants and transform them into dye colours; how to colour yarns; how to space-dye yarns for multi-coloured effects; and how to pattern cloth by printing or painting with dyes, and using batik techniques. The book should be a useful source of information for craft dyers, textile students and anyone seeking a successful alternative to synthetic dyes. It should also be of interest to textile restorers and conservationists, and instrument and furniture makers and restorers.

Ideal 17 Feb 2010

I purchased this for my mother, but was so impressed I got a second copy for myself. Nice clear english, easy to understand with a lot of practical information which makes it easy to use. I enjoyed the photos, it is so nice to see clear pictures of what you are trying to achieve. I was impressed with how many everyday plants can be used, normally, things like this cost a fortune to get all the equipement, not in this case. I would highly recommend this book to anyone dyeing their own wool/fleece whether experienced or new. Great book

A great starter book 2 April 2012

Jenny Dean has produced a great practical starter book which opens up the possibilities for anyone wanting to practice and experiment with colours from the plant world.

It is clearly laid out with great pictures and examples, full explanations and safety advices. It gives a good selection of fibres, dyestuffs and mordants, showing the difference results with a wide range of each.

There is also has a small section on growing your own dyes to whet the appetite for anyone wishing to expand their craft.

It is also very readable in it's own right, and I thoroughly recommend it.
