5.0 out of 5 stars The epic story of possibly Britain's greatest institution, 17 Oct 2002
By buddingpasha "A multilateralist" (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The story of the NHS parallel's the story of post-war Britain. Rivett's book gives a multilayered account of life before the NHS and its subsequent development. The book is well organised with a timeline that plants the NHS firmly in amongst the contemporary world events that it was alive to see. Each chapter starts with a general sketch of the challenges then comprehensively examines the developments in each area of healthcare.
I bought this book as a reference but found it to be an epic story full of drama, tragedy, intrigue and yes many instances of humour. There are solitary heroes and heroines whose songs are unsung, visionary and machivellian politicians and then there is the history of Britain for 50 years after the war.....
This is really a great book, mandatory for anyone connected to the NHS and for matter anyone interested in the UK. Read it!
