Product Description

The debut feature of Jordan Scott, daughter of Ridley Scott, is a period drama set in an English boarding school for girls in the 1930s. Many of the girls at the school have a crush on their beautiful young swimming instructor, the enigmatic Miss G (Eva Green). Hitherto Miss G has done little to discourage their idolatry, but when exotic Spanish pupil Fiamma (Maria Valverde) starts at the school, Miss G's attention is diverted as she becomes increasingly fascinated by the new arrival - much to the chagrin of her doting devotees.

Product Description

United Kingdom released, Blu-Ray/Region B DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby DTS-HD Master Audio ), English ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Cast/Crew Interview(s), Interactive Menu, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: A teacher who prides herself on being different meets a student who matches her non-conformist nature in this period drama. It's 1934, and Miss G (Eva Green) is a teacher at a private school for girls near the Eastern coastline of England. While most of the teachers at the school are severe and straight-laced women who reinforce its reputation as a repressive environment, Miss G is more youthful and glamorous than her colleagues, and enjoys dropping hints of a free-spirited past to her young charges. Miss G encourages her students to challenge conventional norms of the day, and organizes a diving team at the school that she oversees with great interest. Miss G also sees a danger in the cliques that dominate the school, and she tries to undermine them, much to the annoyance of Di (Juno Temple), who hold a high place in the school's pecking order. But things change for both Miss G and her students when Fiamma (Maria Valverde) enrolls at the school. Fiamma is from Spain and has a strong independent streak; she doesn't look to her peers for approval and insists on doing things her own way, which makes her all the more exotic and appealing to the other students. Fiamma also earns the approval of Miss G, but before long rumors begin to spread that the teacher's interest in her new student is more than academic. CRACKS was the first feature film from director Jordan Scott, whose father is the noted filmmaker Ridley Scott. ...Cracks (2009) (Blu-Ray)

4.0 out of 5 stars The Prime of Miss G 28 Jan 2010
By Keris Nine TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
The familiar story of the inspirational teacher is given a deliciously sinister twist in this adaptation of the Sheila Kohler's novel by Jordan Scott. Set in a boarding school in the 1930s, a group of schoolgirls under the thrall of daring glamorous diving instructor Miss G is shook up by the arrival of a talented and exotic new girl. Eva Green at first comes across as a little mannered and not totally convincing, but her Joan Crawford impersonation ends up being appropriate and suited to her character and she carries it off well. The story perhaps doesn't delve as deeply into the strange alien world of the female adolescent mindset as some other recent foreign films on the subject (Innocence, Water Lilies), following instead a mostly conventional line on bullying and female power games - but even that gives rise to events that are truly shocking and all too believable. Beautifully photographed - you'd expect that at least from the daughter of Ridley - with excellent, natural performances from the girls, Cracks is a strong debut from Jordan Scott.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crackles with tension 20 April 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Saw this film after seeing it reviewed in a magazine. From the first few moments till right to the end the tension between teacher and students was electric, but they could have explored the budding crush the teacher had for the spanish girl a little more. Eva Green is once again captivating and beautiful, a lush film for a rainy afternoon with a mug of chocolate. Delicious!!

5.0 out of 5 stars delicately beautiful 27 April 2010
Format:DVD
A fantastic first film from Ms Scott and a fabulous performance from all the main characters, but especially Eva Green. This is a gentle and intelligent film that explores the dark side of love and infatuation. Ms Scott treats the story with delicacy and subtley that draw the viewer into the isolated world enhabitted by the characters. The cinematorgraphy is just lovely. This is definately not a film for people who want action and a fast pace, but if you want an inteligent film that explores human emotion and relationships and will stay with you long afterwards, then I can totaly recomend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Coming of age film with a dark twist 1 Jan 2011
Format:DVD
Cracks definitely looks ominous by the cover.

However, once you're watching it its beautiful cinematography suggests an idyll that is both sterotypical and yet beautifully extravagant. If you like movies like Atonement, where the plot feels like there is a strong sense of omen from the start, set against a period background, then this film is for you.In terms of plot, the character of Miss G (played by Eva Green) is very sinister, yet one cannot fail to be mesmerised by her screen presence.

A film not heard by many people, but it has the feel of the bigger screen pictures.

3.0 out of 5 stars The South African Connection 26 Mar 2010
By Ariete
Format:DVD
The location for this movie is now the UK. The book was written about a South African Girl's School, St Andrew's in Bedfordview, Johannesburg by ex-pupil Sheila Kohler. The name "cracks" refers to the slang used at the school to describe having a crush on a teacher or pupil ("she is cracked on ..."). The setting of the storyline in Britain some 20 years earlier than the events in the novel is most appropriate for the culture of the school at the time.

An ex-St Andrean.

3.0 out of 5 stars Desire, jealousy and tragedy 19 Jun 2011
By Maria2222 TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
If most films on the subject are to be believed, boarding schools are horrible places with old and strict yet funnily absent teachers. This school, however, has the glamorous and beautiful young teacher miss G in charge of the diving team which is formed of the queen bees among the students. Most of the girls have developed crushes on Miss G and even those who haven't see her as the perfect independent and desirable role model. When a beautiful Spanish girl joins the school and the diving team, it unsettles the hierarchy and jealosy and tragedy follows.

The film is very well acted in all roles and Eva Green is amazing as the exotic Miss G. The story as such is good and touches on some relevant and important subjects, but I just feel that it's too similar to other films I've seen before. However, if you're a fan of Ms Green and have a rainy Sunday to spare, you could do much worse than putting this on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracks DVD 17 Jun 2013
By MAGZ
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Really enjoyable movie, set in a girls boarding school, with a teacher who always seemed to take them swimming outside rather than doing lessons, even waking the girls up to drag them out of their beds, a teacher who definitely lives in a fantasy world, I could guess what was going to happen once I noticed the new spanish girl Fiammas condition, but it had an ending which was unexpected and I liked that about the film.
I bought the movie soundtrack first as it is beautiful, Javier Navarrete is a wonderful composer. (he also did PAN'S LABYRINTH music) so couldnt wait to get hold of the DVD after the soundtrack.
Di (Juno Temple) played a great part in the film as the main character and gang leader of the girls.
Put the kettle on, get in your cosy chair and enjoy this girly film
