This is probably the most comprehensive and up-to-date guide available to writing for the UK short story market. It covers basic topics such as plotting, characterisation and dialogue, and also has chapters on writing genre fiction, writing for radio, writing for competitions, and more. There is also a long and helpful chapter on 'The Art of Selling'. The style is highly readable, sometimes quite witty, and the author uses plenty of examples drawn from his own (and other authors') published work. In my opinion this book is an essential buy for any aspiring short story writer, along with 'Creating Short Fiction' by Damon Knight (Writer's Digest Books) for a more theoretical/literary perspective.

I have read many many books purporting to make me a whizz at writing short stories but none, I repeat NONE, as good or as clearly written as Iain Pattison's. Not only does it explain the nitty gritty of putting an attention grabbing story together but goes on to cover presentation, selling, writing for radio, competitions, erotica, etc. etc. All in all the essential book for a writers bookshelf.

What a good time to ask for a review as I have just finished reading the book!!

I am very impressed with Cracking the Short Story Market. I found it very informative and a very good read. It gave me lots of ideas that I would never have thought of. It has exercises to do at the end of each chapter but I decided to read it through first before doing these. I would highly recommend this book because it is very easy to read, it is thought-provoking and also entertaining. Top Marks!
