Whilst still in the bottle this product has a delicate aroma, which is somewhat reminiscent of Parma Violets Parma Violets box of 100, but as a shower gel, the aroma seems enhanced or accentuated by the heat of the water and becomes more intense, and leaves a long lasting fragrance. It also lives up to the maker's claim of leaving the skin feeling softened.

However, as a foam bath, my wife was less impressed; she has a penchant for expensive and exotic fragrances but described this one as "being pretty standard", moreover, in order to get a decent amount of foam quite a lot has to be used (but we do live in a hard water area), nonetheless, as this gel retails at £56 per litre, it's perhaps not the sort of thing you want to be splashing about like cheap perfume.

Some reviewers have commented on the rigidity of the bottle making it not easy to squeeze, but in reality, one doesn't need to squeeze that hard... turn the bottle upside down and let gravity do the work. We have bath oils in glass jars (and those are completely rigid) but it's the same principle at work.

Undoubtedly, the biggest flaw with this product is the price; as Lord Sugar recently said on the "The Apprentice"... if he had not been the electronics industry he would have made his fortune in the beauty industry which is renowned for its "low costs but high profit margins" (which was in the 2011 series, and second programme I think) and this gel does seem to be a an indicator of that. As such, plus its disappointment as a foam bath, this is the reason we've awarded it 3 stars instead of 4 or 5.

The bath and shower gel comes packaged in a good quality cream cardboard box with an Iris watercolour type design on the front. There is a lengthy ingredient list on the box, much of which I am unfamiliar with. It all states that the product is for adult use only. I don't know what would happen if a child used it, I have not seen that statement before....

Out of the box, the gel is in an opaque plastic bottle, with the same iris design as the box. The cap is a 'pop-up' one, with a small gap and I couldn't really get any scent from it other than a vaguely floral soapy scent. According to the packaging the fragrance comes from the root of the iris flower and is "blended with sandalwood, sensuous patchouli and a hint of fresh vetiver". To be honest I don't think I would have identified any of these scents unless I knew they were supposed to be there.

The first time I used this it was in the bath. popped up the cap and squeezed a blob out into running water. Nothing much really came out, as the slot is quite tiny, so I repeated it two more times, and barely made a dent in the bottle contents. There were some bubbles but not a huge amount (to be fair, it doesn't bill itself as a bubble bath), they were pleasant while they lasted, but disappeared about 10-15 minutes in. No residue was left in my tub. After drying off I was pleased how soft my skin felt, I deliberately didn't moisturise straight afterwards just to see, and apart from my heels (which are a dry skin law unto themselves), my skin didn't feel dry either.

I mostly use this as a shower gel though, you can only get a small amount through the tiny gap in the lid, but I find this is usually all I need.

This is a luxury item and claims to be just that, and on that basis alone it does exactly what it sets out to do. It is a great shower gel; but a much better relaxing bath gel. The scent is really very nice, but much more for a woman than a man, even though I still loved it. I do a lot of swimming and can't always shift the chlorine smell, but this managed it perfectly.

It is made from the root of the iris flower which according to the box `was highly prized by Renaissance perfumers who used it in their elegant creations'.

This is then blended with sandalwood some other things and `fresh vetiver', which is also the name of a rather good band whose laid back soft alt country would be a perfect accompaniment to listen to, whilst relaxing in this great little product. It does say on the box, 'for adult use only', but does not say why, an explanation would be helpful.

Not for everyday use but special occasions or when you have had a stressful day, and because it is so thick I found you don't need to use too much, so it actually goes further. For a special treat I am sure you will really enjoy this Crabtree and Evelyn product.

I love Crabtree and Evelyn - I never walk past the shop, but have to go in just to enjoy the smell of the place. "Iris" and 3 other scents seem to be their new range and are being heavily promoted in the shop at the moment.

The packaging is good quality and very pretty with the iris picture prominent, both on the box and on the bottle - it looks good in the bathroom and is clearly a luxury product. The flip top dispenser worked fine for me - no problem with getting the contents out. I like green, fresh smells and was therefore somewhat disappointed with the heavy and rather cloying scent of "Iris". It lingered briefly on the skin, but was gone within a couple of hours.

It also didn't lather that much, either as a shower gel or a bubble bath.

If you like musk and aldehydic perfumes you may like this. If you like green or floral perfumes, you're probably better off going for "Lily" which appears to be their new Lily of the Valley scent and which I liked much better.
