As well as the usual fascinating background of the Navajo Indian reservation, it's customs, traditions and culture, this novel comes with a great story that doesn't unravel until the very end. As we criss-cross the "Rez" to find out what really happened when a Navajo police officer is shot dead in his car and then burnt, we come across a shaman, white academics with an interest in Indian affairs, the FBI, and Vietnamese who have worked for the CIA. A mystery which tests the resources of Leaphorn and Chee, Hillerman's Navajo Tribal Police detectives to the limit. Storywise, it's the best of the Hillerman's I've read.
