I wanted something to replace my Creative Zen Vision:M which recently died in the mp3 playing department and didn't want to go down the Apple route. After reading around reviews on the web I ordered a Cowon O2 (16Gb) last Saturday; it arrived promptly on the Wednesday via the Amazon free-delivery service. It was up and running almost straight away following a battery charge. It does just what I wanted, plays my CDs which I previously ripped and I can carry round my photos to bore as many people as I like. Not got many videos yet to view but those I have play beautifully. Touch screen and menus easy to use and transferring files very simple (especially for an older user like me), just connect by USB cable provided and drag'n'drop. Mains charger provided so you can charge it up anywhere. Size could be an issue for those wanting to carry it around in a pocket (as it is bigger than an i-pod touch) but for those of us with a handbag no problem. Overall a very satisfied customer so far.

I wanted a media player for watching films, listening to music and possibly viewing documents. The expandable storage via SD card appealed to me, I thought this device would be useful when travelling as I could load pictures. I also wanted a text viewer, I had the idea of loading foreign language dictionaries into it. It apparently reads pdf files, but theres almost nothing available in the way of applications. Finally, I decided on this product because it has a play out facility. I teach film studies and thought this would make an ideal device in which to load up extracts from films I could then play back to the class.
This is easy enough to use with an apple i mac. It reads it as a usb storage device on your desktop, dragging and dropping music and video files into the relevant folders was a breeze. I think you can probably create subfolders and arrange your music and vids that way. Didn t spend long enough to find out.
Good size screen, picture clear and sharp. Touch screen controls easy to navigate. Can be fiddly, this device isn t as intuitive as the i pod touch, so you need to give yourself some time, be patient to find your way around it. Not as nice to use as the i pod touch screen, however the supplied stylus which cleverly doubles as a holder helps greatly (good design Cowon). I have zero patience with technology and even I found navigating this gadget fairly straightforward. The icons and interface look a bit cheap, I gather its a linux based system and I guess this keeps the price to a reasonable level.
Despite the all plastic housing it feels tactile, rugged and well put together. Its quite heavy, larger than other players. Pocketable, but you will notice you're carrying it.
Sadly, I m returning it for one reason: Tried playing out music through a pair of miniature speakers and even with volume turned up to max you can barely hear it. The same mp3 files played through an i pod with the same speakers sound fine. Output on this device just isn t powerful enough. Such a shame. I m going for a 16G i pod which isn t so good for films, smaller screen, less storage but compensated for by all the other applications it runs, including language dictionaries which are more use travelling than watching films. If: you don t need all the apps of the i pod, you want ability to transport lots of movies (and this has massive expandable storage) and you re happy listening through headphones, buy this product.
