Great format support (ogg, flac, etc), which as a Linux user is great, but don't bother if you want to use it for video - get an Archos instead. It's too small, and video is finicky - you'll have to transcode anything you want to watch. TV out cable is extra, expensive & the quality is poor. The DAB radio is only any good if the device is fully charged, and even then DAB reception here in London is not great, but that's a problem with DAB, rather than this device, probably.

I've owned two of these. When I had the misfortune to drop my first one into a cup of tea I looked hard for a product that would improve on it. But there's not one. It's fair to say that it doesn't do very much, when compared with more up-to-the-minute offerings. But what it does do, it does well. It doesn't play video -- not very well, anyway. It doesn't do wifi. It doesn't play games. What it does do is play audio, fantastically well, for a long, long time: I routinely get more than 50 hours of use on a single charge.

    Other good things:

    - It supports FLAC audio format. Most players still don't.
    - It is one of the few pocket players still available that does not have its volume restricted. That's a big deal if you use high-impedance headphones, not to mention if you just like it loud.
    - It remembers what you were listening to without specific bookmarking operations (although it does support bookmarking). That's a big deal if you listen to long audio tracks like audiobooks or CDs ripped whole.
    - It looks like a USB disk. You don't need any proprietary software to copy stuff onto it.
    - It uses a bog-standard USB cable.
    - It has a DAB radio. FM reception in my area is terrible, and it's never brilliant with pocket players.
    - It has no 'standby' mode -- it's either on or off. When it's off, it uses no battery power. It starts up in about four seconds.
    - Aside from dropping it in a cup of tea, it's almost indestructible.

My only criticism is that the DAB radio was a bit fiddly to get set up (as it was on my first unit) -- it didn't scan and I had to download a station list to get it started. It's been fine since then, however.

Cowon's newer media players aren't bad.

After a lot of research, I settled for this little gem. Its been more than a year now and it has not let me down. If this goes bad, I will buy the same again :-)
It would be great if it had a Line-Out for home amplifiers. Thats the only negative.

This offers me what I want - excellent quality audio playback on a small device, with memory expandable with SDHC cards, allowing me to set my own folder structure to access my audio in the way I want using Windows Explorer, rather than someone else who wrote the interface software thought I might want to. The battery can be charged and content transferred with a standard USB cable. There are lots of options to get the interface configured the way I want it. The battery seems to last forever - I have achieved in excess of the 52 hours quoted.

Yes, the screen is smallish for watching video (though it doesn't cause me any problems, with good detail to my eyes) but I can't see that is anything to complain about as it is clear in the product details. If you want a large screen, get something else, but personally I use it for audio 95% of the time so the small device is what I wanted.

The DAB radio on the original D2 was unreliable, but on the D2+ it is solid and I've had no problems.

I cannot for the life of me understand why some have raved about this product!!! The screen is washed out and hopelessly difficult to read. Being a small screen wouldn't it have made sense to ensure the clarity was pin sharp??? The other unforgivable thing is that I purchased the unit because it played FLAC files and included DAB. However the DAB tuner doesn't work!!! The overall sound quality was no great shakes either, not a patch on my Sony!! This player is badly implemented, poorly executed and the backup from the manufacturers is non-existent as regards the non-working DAB issue!! Needless to say I hastily returned this awful product!
