an extremely expensive but extremely desirable PMP... (CNET.co.uk);The Cowon iAudio Q5W is certainly impressive

Product Description

If the Cowon iAudio Q5 was a super car it would be the Bugatti Veyron. Technologically advanced super powerful exclusive and reassuringly expensive. Your jaw is probably not quite off the floor having looked at the price. The Q5 is not so much an MP3 player or even a Portable Media Player it’s more akin to an ultra-mobile media PC. It runs a mobile version of Windows (WinCE 5.0 Professional) as its operating system – this means you’ve got the familiarity of MSN Messenger Internet Explorer and Microsoft Word. Some may regard the presence of the ubiquitous Windows logo as a bit of hindrance – worry not Cowon have integrated their own software which auto-loads spritely once Windows is up and running. Before we examine Cowon’s unique Wing Click interface the Q5’s majestic 5 inch 16 million colour widescreen LCD screen is quite simply jaw dropping. Probably the best complement one could pay to the clarity the richness and the vibrancy of its reproduction is that colours look real. They are not oversaturated for dramatic effect like in other big name brands the screen is not too bright it’s balanced to perfection. The entire screen is touch sensitive in some other portable media players this leads to a slight opaqueness due to the extra layer of protection needed on the screen’s surface – the Q5 features none of this. The touch screen interface is unfussy straight forward and immediate. You can navigate either using your fingers or the extendable stylus stored in the top right hand corner of the player. The Q5 does not employ fancy unnecessary menu graphics this is a serious performer. Via the Wing Click GUI you can easily flip modes features and settings by the category grouped icons that appear vertically to the left and right of the screen. This simplicity of operation is extended to the built in file viewer music and movie playback systems and other built in applications. You’re only ever a couple of clicks away from extensive customisation options and playb

I have had this about a month and am very pleased with it.
It has the best sound quality of any player i have ever heard (and i have used most).
The drag and drop works very well from any windows PC without the need for software.
it does get very warm after about 2 hours of operation but not to the point of doing any harm.
the only thing i have yet to find is a car charger !
Battery life seems to be about 10 hours but it charges very quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best PMP out there, 16 Mar 2009
This review is from: Cowon IAudio Q5 80Gb Portable MediaPlayer (Electronics)
I'm something of an audio connoisseur, having used portable music players since the days of tape cassettes. Simply put, the Cowon Q5W is the best pmp available. It is difficult to sum this gadget up as it does so much so very well. If you are looking to buy the absolute best sounding player out there then this is the one to get. Sound quality is simply as good as it gets. If you experiment with FLAC (lossless) format music... you're in audio heaven. Nothing comes close.

This thing supports every format out there for audio and video too. This is not for the "ipod" crowd (form over substance). This is for those that just want the best

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good but..., 13 Nov 2009

The Cowon is an excellent unit that can read a huge range of file types and produces very good video and audio. But there are some strange things with it that make you go .. huh?

* It is very robust (a little heavy even) but then they cover the USB socket with a little flimsy plastic door that looks like it could break off at any time and doesn't close propery.

* The Windows CE op-sys gives great potential but the version they use looks a bit old - think of a cut-down Windows 98SE, with all the associated hassle configuring wireless networking. It is also a bit slow to start up and can struggle to keep up if you flick quickly between movies.

* The headphones are adequate but for a unit that is supposed to produce such great audio I'd have thought they might have included some noise cancelling or attenuating headphones because listening to anything on the metro or an airplane is very difficult.

* The touch screen is great but it doesn't look like it has the pinch zoom facility that something like the iPod has.

* Out of the box it didn't read PDF files but after we downloaded the Microsoft file viewers for Cowon (free to download) it gave us the necessary software ... but that seemed a bit messy to me - why weren't they there at the start?

Saying all that my girlfriend loves it and wouldn't be without it now. The screen is very clear and vibrant making it really easy to watch movies and the sound quality is excellent (when there is no ambient noise).
