I had an Archos 6 tablet for a year and a half until the battery (and more besides) gave up on me, and wanting a device that I could fit my entire music collection on I was limited to only a few players. I decided to try out Cowon's 120GB X7.

Verdict: I think it's great - the USB connection is fast and reliable when browsing the player, there's no hanging around because it's gone to sleep. The battery life is amazing, and the touch screen feels far better than the Archos. The player provides great sound, and the provided earphones are surprisingly good.

Slight niggles are things like you can't program playlists on the device - you've got to transfer them over from your computer. There's no support for PDF or other texts formats that you may want to carry around with you. And there's no wifi support, which is a shame as this feels like a device that would handle it well.

Still as a music device, I'm very happy with it indeed.

I promised that once I had used this for a while I would come back to review it. With very mixed messages on Amazon regarding it I felt I might be able to help someone decide one way or the other.

One complaint I've seen listed is that the system font is difficult to read I have to say I didn't have any problems with it. For what its worth the new firmware upgrade gives you the ability to change the font. So that is a non issue now.

Another complaint was about how the player stops working when run completely flat. The user manual actually says this in the guide. If you run it totally flat (unsurprisingly) you need to let it charge up before it will establish a connection to a computer. Just running it totally flat takes a bit of effort as the battery life is immense even using the normal 'standby' mode. But I ran it totally flat and let it charge for a few minutes and then it will start up quite happily. If its totally flat you need to actually start it back up and you can then start using it again even while its charging. The kit comes with a wall charger so even if for some reason you couldn't get the computer to charge it just use the power charger.

It is let down by some rather strange interface decisions.

For instance its got bookmarks and favourites to let you skip to a particular point in a mix or get to stuff that you play a lot. Problem is to get to it you click a small black box in the top left corner of the screen. Said black box doesn't actually do anything on a music page you need to get to a listing of tracks for it to do anything. So then say you click into the list of favourites and you want to go back and go into the bookmarks section, you would think you click the icon of a half circle arrow in the top right of the screen.

This is just such a shame. The sound is absolutely superb, and cannot be faulted. It really brought recordings to life. Got this for parents who were thinking of the Brennan. I steered them this way as our son has got on very well with the cowon s9. I put all their cds and digitized their LPs for them and loaded it all up. The user interface is really really clunky, and totally counter-intuitive. Scrolling with the touch screen is quite maddening, often ending up opening files by accident. I did try the user interfaces developed by Kizune on the Net, and though these tidied up the art work and provided some improvements in indexing, they were rather too nerdy and did not do the obvious things simply. Now had it been me, I could have left the thing on constant shuffle and enjoyed the sound, but my parents are not as indiscriminate as I, and wished to select albums to play them as and when they felt like them. Their collection is not that extensive, but it was almost impossible to find stuff that they were looking for. The search function is quite useless especially as the keyboard row 2 was one character out of alignment.

Touch screen- think really poor SatNav rather than say Samsung Galaxy II!!
User Interface - liken it to etch-a-sketch level of control compared with say Windows Media player.
Sound Quality - this is prime seats in the Barbican rather than "I'll just put you on hold"

I just hope that Cowon gets together with some real software designers who know how to make intuitive interfaces and put this lemon behind them. I should certainly be interested if they do!!!

Personally I blame apple, whatever your opinions on the ipod or itunes its hard to knock how simple and intuitive their products are to use. When I had filled up my 60gb ipod touch and couldn't bare to delete any more songs to make room for new ones I started looking for a new mp3 player. To find one larger than 60gb however is as tough task, the market isn't exactly flooded, it basically came to the Cowon X7 or a ipod classic, after having an Ipod touch buying a classic seemed like downgrading and most reviews of the Cowon seemed positive, especially in terms of audio quality and as 98% of what I used my ipod touch for was listening to music this seemed ideal, no gimmicks, no apps which are only used once then deleted, it seemed to offer more freedom and a large hard drive to fit my expanding music collection in.

It arrived, I was very excited, this was me being different, I could scoff at all my ipod and iphone owning friends and blow them away with the superior sound of my Cowon X7. Delivery was quick, in fact I received the item before the dispatch e-mail, the box was cool and smart, it came with a plug charger which is a bonus compared to the Ipod and though the Cowon X7 itself seemed large and chunky this was not really an issue for me.

So my first step was to load up music, I knew I could simply drag and drop my music library but after years of itunes I preferred to download an alternative music library management system. Over the weekend I got this item I must have tried numerous and none of them seemed to connect up to my Cowon and sync across the music, I wasted hours of my weekend attempting this but nothing worked. I'll do it the old fashioned way then i thought, select all, copy and then paste.
