Biography

Already celebrated as a discoverer and interpreter of other artists’ songs, 12-time Grammy Award–winner Emmylou Harris has, in the last decade, become admired as much for her eloquently straightforward songwriting as for her incomparably expressive singing. On Hard Bargain, her third Nonesuch disc, she offers 11 original songs - three of them co-written with Grammy– and ... Read more in Amazon's Emmylou Harris Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of grace and beauty 6 Feb 2005
By Pieter Uys HALL OF FAME TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This gem of an album opens with the most moving song A Ways To Go, a deeply spiritual number with a gripping melody. The Light, a slow, sad love song with an ultimate message of hope, follows it. Then on to High Powered Love, a brilliant blend of witty lyrics and vocal passion and You Don't Know Me, an achingly beautiful number that sounds almost devotional in its tenderness. This one reminds me of one of Joan Baez's early folk songs, Lady Mary, on one of her 1960s albums.
Prayer In Open D, one of Harris' own compositions, is a spiritual masterpiece exploring the dark valleys of the soul, but with a comforting undertone of mercy and redemption. Sort of like a more intellectual Green Pastures (on Roses In The Snow), it is real gooseflesh stuff. Emmylou gives Lucinda Williams' Crescent City a splendid, lilting treatment to create a fuller, more evocative sound without sacrificing the original's poignant mood of yearning and nostalgia.
Another brilliant story song is Lovin' You Again with its captivating plot and authentic emotion, a mature and poetic love ballad. In the spoken track Jerusalem Tomorrow, Emmylou narrates a powerful and wistful tale over moody, atmospheric music. This unusual number proves that her talking is as appealing as her singing. Thanks To You has a jerky rhythm and a bluesy feel, whilst I Hear A Call is a soulful song of transcendence, one of my favourites on Cowgirl's Prayer. The playing and arrangement are sheer genius as they perfectly carry and frame her vocals.
Her haunting version of Ballad Of A Runaway Horse shows what a sympathetic interpreter of Leonard Cohen she can be. I wish Emmylou would do it more often. The inflections of her voice and her phrasing are just perfect for Cohen's music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 26 April 2004
Format:Audio CD
Just about my favourite Emmmylou Harris album - a perfect mixture ofstripped back acoustic tracks such as Cowgirl's Prayer, and the morerocking, foot-tapping songs such as Crescent City. If you can find a copyof this, snap it up. You won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Harris near her best 14 Jun 2001
Format:Audio CD
Well, it's rock, it's pop and it's country, all of which Harris does well. The opening track, 'A Ways To Go', weaves a great guitar rhythm, and 'High Powered Love' is Harris at her rocking best. Another highlight is 'Crescent City', written by Lucinda Williams, part of the Harris mutual admiration society. And why not? There is much to admire Harris for on this evidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely the best 13 Sep 2004
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I've just received a cd copy of this album from Amazon.com - it's still available in the States as a mid price item. Intruigingly it is on Elektra/Asylum rather than Grapevine. I agree with all the comments made by the previous reviewer and would add only that back in 94 or 95 I heard Ms Harris perform an acoustic and slower version of Crescent City on BBC Radio 4's 'Loose Ends' programme. At that point she joined my top three female singers of all time - alongside Sandy Denny and Laura Nyro. I really do love the Warner Brothers albums as well - but Cowgirl's Prayer has all the depth and spititual maturity that have characterised her subsequent releases.
