I unwrapped this item with no instructions and no invoice attached.

I tried to guess how this came together and started by screwing the dish to the fixings but, without a nut (wasn't supplied), the dish just swung round.

Im regretting buying this but have a husband who is handy, so I might be able to bodge it.

I would return this but as I am in the UK and the item came from the US, its just not worth the hassle.

I bet Cowboy studios are rubbing their hands with this decision.

I wonder if Cowboy means the same thing in the US like it does in the UK? Let that be a warning.

bit of a nightmare to set up, the flash mount is a pain and the spill from no covering between the flash head and the dish is just annoying.

Don't really think it's worth it.

Good for the money 2 April 2011
By Chris Hardy - Published on Amazon.com

The dish is great, considering what it costs. There are a few cheap parts, like the swivel that attaches it to a light stand, and the diffuser is literally a shower cap. I replaced the swivel with an umbrella adapter, and the shower cap is not a problem.
The problem I did have was with Cowboystudio. They sent the wrong dish, and were absolutely incredulous that they had done so. It took several emails for them to answer, and then I had to send them JPEGs of what they sent before they would believe me. They sent a UPS return label, I sent the dish back, and then again I couldn't get them to reply, or tell me when, or if, they would send the right dish. It did finally show up, almost a month after I had ordered it.
If good communication from the seller is important to you, think twice about dealing with Cowboystudio.

Good but not great 16 Mar. 2011

I bought this knowing that it is a budget item, and yet I was still somewhat disappointed. That says a lot.

Basically the beauty dish itself is decent to say the least. But the various connectors to make it useful for you are not. The ball head, for instance, is so crappy that it can't even hold up the beauty dish and bracket even without a flash attached! Even if you turn the tiny, hard-to-find set screw very tight (where on most ball heads all movement would be prevented, even if you wanted to adjust it) the dish still droops completely and quickly.

The flash cold shoe has a very simple and weak metal spring. Basically it will not hold your flash, especially if it's one of the newer style Nikons with the single pin to hold it on. You can get MUCH better shoes all over the place. (The Frio looks like the best one, but I haven't actually used it yet.)

The pins that hold the internal reflector in place were mounted in the wrong holes (should be evenly spaced around the center), and were not bent on the correct angle. This was easy to fix, but fixing shouldn't have been necessary.

In the end I love this dish, but only after I replaced the fittings with decent ones. Still, this is MUCH better than typical Do-It-Yourself dishes, so grab one, fix it, and use it! :)

Oh, did I mention that without the speedlight bracket it is a direct fit on AlienBees/WhiteLighting/Einstein lights? :)

Utter Crap 24 Mar. 2011

When I bought this, I wasn't expecting a whole lot, but even then, I was very disappointed right form the start. It comes with a lot of separated parts, but no instructions. After looking here at the photo's, I was able to guess how it went together. I used it for about 10 minutes and noticed that the dish was sagging quite a bit off the mount. When I took it down, I realized that the screw mount that holds the flash bracket onto the beauty dish had already come loose from it's the surrounding metal. There is nothing I can do about it. Essentially, this mount is in no way designed to hold this size dish. Also, the ball head is not strong enough to even hold the beauty dish up. I am returning this today. You really do get what you pay for and in this case you get even less. DO NOT BUY THIS! Spend a few more dollars and get something better, really.

Shallow mount results in poor spill pattern unless grid or diffuser is used. 2 Dec. 2012
By AVS - Published on Amazon.com
Got this from auction site with grid and diffuser.
Here is what I like:
o Fit and finish are solid. I especially like the silver dish coating - somewhere between reflective and matte.
o Mounting looks sufficiently rugged with metal plates and thumb-screws
o Lightweight enough for use on a nano stand.
o Central reflector is attached to the dish with 3 wires which offer normal and recessed position. This design is lightweight. Off course I'd rather have one position that works really well instead of figuring out which one to use.
o Grid is of the right diameter, is attached to the dish using grid's plastic tabs, which provide an adequate hold.

Not so good:
o No user manual. No biggie. I would still love to hear an "official" take on flash zoom and reflector position.
o Mounting hardware prevents tilting the dish down by more than about 45°. Might be a problem if you do not use the dish on a boom or are not willing to modify (cut) the hardware.
o No provisions to use two flashes.
o Major bummer. The flash mounting hardware is such that the flash barely enters the inside of the dish. This results in an unappealing light spill pattern almost unaffected by flash zoom or reflector position. Compare that to the light pattern with the entire pivoting part of the flash inserted into the dish. The difference is stunning!

My conclusion is that this product should be treated as a great DIY set and can not be used as is. I plan to design a new mounting mechanism which would allow for a deep insertion of the flash into the dish. In all fairness use of the grid and/or diffuser might mitigate the ugly spill problem. More pictures in my blog and flickr post.

Could be better, but does the job. 10 May 2011

I'd pay $10's more if they beefed up the mount. The beauty dish is so heavy that the flimsy ring that the flash bracket attached to sags. I had to get small bungies to pull the dish tight to my flash head to get even distribution, and minimize light loss. The ball head flash mount is worthless. It's not strong enough to hold the heavy dish up. I'm now using an umbrella mount so that I have a tilting function. This is a product that obviously needs refined. It's 90% of the way. I'd recommend it all day if they fixed just a few minor things. I got a heavy duty stand from them that I am very happy with. so I trust that they can make a good product at a good value.
