My fascination with the western has lead me to watch many strange variants, and this one falls safely in the strange category. Originally known as "The Dead and Damned" the title was clearly changed to cash in on the Spielberg blockbuster "Cowboys and Aliens". This one was made with a somewhat smaller budget than Spielberg is accustomed to work with, which becomes apparent from the films opening scenes. It is reminiscent of films like "Billy the Kid vs Dracula"(65) and Jesse James meets Frankensteins Daughter"(66). I hope they were both very happy together! So the horror western is not a new genre. Once you accept the poor production values and the title which lets you know what you are in for, it was to my great surprise not all that bad.
The cast have a lot of fun dressing up as a very colourful bunch of zombies, and there are a lot of laughs to be had along the way, together with surprisingly good cinematography on the odd occasion. It is supposed to be set in 1849, although that looked a bit suspect, and in any case I dont suppose it matters a jot anyway. In a Coen brothers touch, the totally random German speaking bounty hunter certainly made me laugh out loud, as did the films hilarious ending, so it was definitely not all bad. Judging from the lack of other reviews it seems to have slipped under the radar, which is not surprising I suppose. In the film a dodgy looking meteor is taken into a western town where it infects all the inhabitants who turn into zombies. Enter a bounty hunter, an Indian and a pretty girl. This pretty girl together with a couple of other well endowed chums, seem to have been included simply to show off their ample feminine charms. This may be of interest to some male viewers! Then just let mayhem begin and hey presto you have a movie. John Ford may be turning in his grave, but no doubt Ed Wood will be having a quiet chuckle to himself. I will now put my credibility as an Amazon reviewer on the line by awarding this film 2.7 stars rounded up to three generous stars. Well it is a western after all!
