I'm a third grade teacher, and it's always great to find a book that's interesting, well-illustrated (with photos and appealing, colored line drawings), and yet is simple and short enough that it can be enjoyed by older kids for whom reading is a struggle.
Since you can't "search inside" the text, here's page 1: "What is a cowboy? Cowboys ride horses and look after cows. There have been cowboys all over the world for hundreds of years. In Argentina, cowboys are called gauchos." [The background of the whole page is a photo of gauchos.] Page 2 and 3: "The Wild West The most famous cowboys lived in the American West over 100 years ago. Not many people lived in the West. There was lots of open space. [19th century painting of cowboys] Most cowboys were young men - the work was too hard when they got older. [Funny little drawing of old man trying to mount a horse, then 3 more small line drawings with the following text] Cowboys liked riding horses and being outside in the fresh air. They wanted jobs that had lots of freedom... but they didn't get paid very much money for their work."
The book is also appealingly small - about 6 x 8" - and nicely bound, using good quality paper. It includes a glossary and an index. A great purchase for any 1st through 3rd or 4th grade classroom!
