4.0 out of 5 stars REVIEW - The Cowboy's Christmas Baby 20 Nov. 2013
By Rachel
Format:Mass Market Paperback
4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Ah ... what a beautiful story this was. The Cowboy's Christmas Baby by Carolyn Brown is exactly as the title suggests. One cowboy, one baby and one heck of a Christmas. A contemporary love story, with some hot scenes, amazing comedy and a list of secondary characters that make you want to read more.

What would you do if you were our main man Lucas?? He comes home to his ranch after serving overseas for the past year, all he wants is a good home cooked meal and to anticipate the arrival of a lady (this is our main lady Natalie) that he has been cyber dating during that year away. What he gets and what meets him at his front door is not only Natalie with a pink pistol in her hands, dead coyote at her feet, but a BABY on her hip. WHAT?? A BABY???

Yah that kinda got my attention too! LOL Turns out Natalie was preggers when they were cyber dating (most def it is deceitful, but she is easy to forgive) and she had wanted to show up a few days early to surprise Lucas. Lucas is, rightfully so, SHOCKED. He is okay with her being there early .. but a BABY?? After the initial shock and a few chapters, there is an acceptance (didn't hurt that the family was completely, excuse the pun, gaga over lil man, and the fact that Natalie grew up on a ranch) Lucas and Natalie settle into really getting to know each other in person. Turns out the chemistry they had over the internet, is doubled face to face. As they ease into a romance, each also deal with the loss of a close friend (you have to read for more on that), and Lucas has trouble with PTSD and reintegrating into his "normal life".

Natalie is a spitfire and one strong woman. Despite her deceit, she is perfect in all ways.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Too Bad... 13 Oct. 2013

For the past year Lucas has been serving in the Military in Kuwait. When one of his buddies dies, Lucas becomes friends with his buddy’s best friend Natalie. They start dating via the internet and using that as a way to get to know one another better. Now Lucas is coming home and he will finally meet in person the woman he has been talking to for the last year.

So he was a bit surprised to find her on his doorstep when he arrived home. Only Natalie wasn’t alone, she had her baby with her. Lucas and Natalie are forced to spend the Christmas Holiday together. Will they be able to work past everything and rediscover the feelings they started to have for one another?

I am just on the fence about this book. On one hand I liked the plot and the characters. On the other hand the story moved along at a slow pace at times. It was a bit frustrating for me to read. The only reason I stuck with it was because I really wanted to see how Lucas and Natalie ended up. I really like Natalie and thought she was an interesting character.

The Cowboy’s Christmas Baby is book number two in the Cowboys & Brides series. I enjoyed it enough that I will be looking forward to the next book, The Cowboy’s Mail Order Bride, coming out in February 2014.

I gave this book a 5 because it finally picked up about half way through and wasn't so disjointed. If I had reviewed at half way it would have been a 3 or 4. So don't get discouraged and give it up. It is sexy and funny and heart warming and has the happy ending that all romance book lovers want.

Won this book as a ARC. I was so thrilled to win and was not disapointed. The book was excellent. The story was funny, sexy and heartwarming. I'm betting there will be a few pink pistols given for presents this year. Carolyn keep up the excellent writing.
4.0 out of 5 stars The Cowboy's Christmas Baby by Carolyn Brown 16 Dec. 2013

Format:Mass Market Paperback
The queen of cowboy romance, Carolyn Brown doesn't disappoint with her latest book in the Cowboys and Brides series, The Cowboy's Christmas Baby. Filled with lots of Christmas traditions, family, friends and a working ranch, this novel is a heartwarming love story with a little bit of sizzle. Fans of Brown's books will love the contemporary theme and realistic situations including an internet romance, that isn't exactly what it seems!

What I liked:

I genuinely loved the theme of this novel. Rancher Lucas Allen is returning home after a tour of duty in Kuwait, only to find that the person he thought he knew from their internet relationship wasn't exactly who she said she was. She left out on important detail... she's a mother. Their mutual friend Drew who was killed in Kuwait fathered her son Joshua and it never seemed the right moment to explain. I thought this theme was very realistic and I could totally buy into something like this happening. Brown did a great job of coming up with a story that would appeal to romance readers who love the strong cowboy type and when mixed with a military background... watch out!

Natlalie had a sassy attitude and fresh outlook on life. I liked the fact that she understands that she should have been more forthcoming with Lucas, but she got sucked into the internet. It has a way of making things anonymous and it's easier to leave things out sometimes even to invent things, but eventually it all comes out. I thought her pink pistol was a riot! I want one... She is a good mother and everyone on the ranch soon falls in love with her and Josh, it just takes Lucas a little longer to come around.

Lucas was great hero materiel. Cowboy's always are. Rugid and handsome. Loyal and courageous. These qualities are even more apparent in Lucas because of his military background. I thought he took a little longer to get over Natalie's omission than he needed to, but I still liked him a lot. He wants to do the right thing, but he isn't quite sure what that is. I loved him!

The romance was great. It had some very heart warming moments as well as some steamy moments which Carolyn is always so good at writing. But there was more than just romantic love on display here. The way Lucas cares for Josh and for his family even those who work for him on the ranch was a joy to read about. I loved all the Christmas hubub and it definitely made me look forward to the season even more.

What I didn't Like:

The story was a little shaky in the beginning. It skipped around a lot and had an overall disjointed feeling to it, but this eventually gives way to a very well written second half that had me smiling from ear to ear. Give it some time on this one, it's well worth the wait for it to pick up.

Bottom Line:

This is another great book by Carolyn Brown, with a great contemporary theme and lots of Christmas cheer. It's just what the doctor ordered to get you the Christmas spirit!
4.0 out of 5 stars sweet, humorous and romantic 17 Nov. 2013

Early this year I read and enjoyed the first book in the Cowboys & Bride series, Billion Dollar Cowboy, by Carolyn Brown. I was excited to see the release of The Cowboy’s Christmas Baby. This time she brings us a yummy rancher who has just finished a tour in Kuwait, and the sassy woman he has been chatting with for the past eleven months. Filled with memorable characters, a friendship to lover’s romance and the joy of the season.

Lucas Allen is excited to be returning home to his ranch, and family. It’s been a year and he is anxious to celebrate the holiday season getting to know Natalie Clark. She is the woman he has been chatting with online for the past eleven months. He has visions of scooping her up in his arms and kissing her silly when she arrives. Imagine his surprise when he returns home to find Natalie surrounded by puppies, holding a pink pistol and a baby in her arms. The tale that unfolds was sweet, sexy and filled with hilarious moments that made me giggle aloud.

Lucas and Natalie have both lost someone special to them, and it has forever changed them. Lucas is sweet and smexy. At times, he could be a stubborn, Neanderthal but you cannot help falling for him. He has a soft spot for family members and even in anger he is tender. He is fairly fleshed out, and I felt his emotions. Natalie is tough, loves sports and ranch life. She is living with the consequences of too much tequila with her best friend and suffering from his loss. Lucus has been her rock, and those night spent chatting online her salvation. This is a friendship to lover’s trope and Brown did a good job of filling in the details, allowing the characters to grow and making the relationship feel real. The secondary characters especially the “three wise men” and the housekeeper really added humor and tender moments to this tale.

The Cowboy’s Christmas Baby was one I easily slipped into. The characters came to life, and I felt like I was right there on the ranch. Brown did a lovely job of creating a rancher’s life, and bringing it to the reader. I liked how Brown used the Angus Association of Ranchers to tie Lucas to the characters in Billion Dollar Cowboy. The tale was well paced, with twists, and turns while not over doing the drama and obstacles. There were lessons, and magical moment s and laughter all around. The romance developed slowly, and while the tale was completely predictable I was happy chasing my HEA. There was a scene where the couple bickered, and I think it should have been handled differently, it put me off Lucas for a New York minute, but we quickly got back on track and I ended up adoring him. The baby who did nothing more than coo, had a unique role in the tale, and I adored every moment and scene he was in.
