Product Description

CD Description

Although Emmylou Harris debut solo album, Gliding Bird, had been released in 1970, prior to 1975 she was probably best-known for her work with Gram Parsons, having been recommended to him by his fellow Byrd Chris Hillman, Gram invited Emmylou to duet with him and sing harmony on his debut GP, released in 1973. She subsequently toured as a part of his band, The Fallen Angels, and is featured extensively on Grievous Angel, also recorded in 1973. Parsons died in September of that year with Grievous Angel released posthumously a year later. Emmylou was distraught by his death but had learned much from her brief sojourn with the personable and influential Gram and continued to champion his ground-breaking work throughout her own career. The 1975 broadcast featured here was aired from San Francisco s famous Boarding House venue and occurred just a year after Parson s death - thus it is hardly surprising that many of the songs included have strong connections with the Parsons-period. Backed by The Hot Band, featuring James Burton and Glen D. Hardin, both of whom had played in Elvis group, and Rodney Crowell, the young Texan songwriter and guitarist whose compositions Emmylou was now championing, it was a testament to the girl s talents that she could attract musicians of this calibre at this formative stage in her own solo career. This performance offers a tantalising glimpse of such qualities as Emmylou displays the full magnificence of her voice in this truly wonderful show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cowboy Angels 31 May 2012

I was also at the 1976 concert at The Liverpool Empire, although I was most definitely there to see Emmylou herself, whose superb singing I'd first heard on Gram Parson's "GP" album. I remember lending that album to a longstanding country music fan who was actually unimpressed by Gram but was very taken with the "girl singer" and suggested that she would go far! The "Cowboy Angels" album takes us back to the very early days of Emmylou's post-Parsons solo career and, for that reason alone, is a must for any fan. Apart from the vocals, the individual musicianship of the great talents making up the first version of The Hot Band is very evident throughout. The only qualification I would make is that, at the time of this radio concert, the musicians were in the early stages of working together and I felt that the overall sound on the album is not as "tight" as it was to become on record and in live performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everlasting enjoyment from Emmylou... 9 May 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
In 1976 I saw Emmylou and the Hot Band at the Liverpool Empire and it was one of the best nights out I ever had, especially as I got to shake hands with the great James Burton after the show! One of the many highlights was seeing James play his Telecaster behind his head during the song 'Shop Around!' This CD was recorded for a radio show in 1975 and features songs that became classics of Emmylou's repertoire. The sound is mostly fine though on one song it dips slightly. As Rodney Crowell said it is easy to fall in love with Emmylou and some years later I met the lady and she gave me a hug when I told her it was my birthday! A very welcome addition to my collection of music. Recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Original Live Emmylou 17 Jun 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Since the first time I came across Emmylou Harris was at a concert in 1977 (one of her earliest in the UK), it was great to be able to acquire a concert recording from the same era.
Often live recordings are very thin and generally poor, but this one certainly is not; the fact that it includes a few less well known numbers is a bonus.
