Rebecca is one of my favourite books, so I was keen to see if this one would hold the same allure for me. Like the former, `My Cousin Rachel' is a mystery-romance novel set in Cornwall and is old-fashioned story-telling at its best, laced with the type of intrigue that will have a reader hooked. These elements kept me reading this book well into the night, along with the fantastically evocative atmosphere, great characters and the underlying tension and suspense that Du Maurier has created.
If you enjoy stories with unreliable narrators then this book will have you gripped. Told from the perspective of Phillip Ashley who has been raised by his bachelor Uncle Ambrose since he was a boy, he is all set to be his heir one day but is surprised when Ambrose marries a distant cousin of his unexpectedly whilst spending the summer in Florence- Phillip's Cousin Rachel. Phillip is even more startled when he receives correspondence from Ambrose a few months later, suggesting that his new wife is not all she seems, and concerned, heads to Florence to find out what is going on. Upon reaching Florence, Phillip is devastated to find that his uncle has actually died a few weeks prior, seemingly of a brain tumour. With Ambrose's' widow now missing, Phillip returns to England to claim his new estate- and is then perplexed by the mysterious arrival of Cousin Rachel to his home...
This was an excellent story full of jealousy, deceit and suspense which is gradually built upon through the narrative. I must confess that at times I winced at Phillip's stupidity and I adored Italian lawyer Rainaldi's sly, sneaky digs at him. The humour in this book is subtle, but was most welcome and added new facets to the characters personalities, which made a nice change from all the thickly layered jealousy and suspicion that did become a bit too deep at times. Just what is it about Cousin Rachel that makes all these men lose their heads?! Go on, and find out for yourself.
As an aside, if this edition was not a Virago `Designer' modern classic then I would not think the print quality was even worth commenting on. However, it is and as a result I feel that I must draw attention to the multiple printing errors and defects contained in the copy I received- all coincidentally towards the end of the book. There were four *blank* pages between the rest of the text for some bizarre reason starting at around page 200 and something... surely this should have been picked up during the printing process? Also, one page was actually halved and crinkle edged (the text continued on regardless) and another page had something stuck on it and the text had proceeded, regardless. I am assuming this was merely a one-off with the edition that I received and happened sometime during the printing and binding process, as other VMC Designer editions I have received have been absolutely faultless. However, as a consequence of this, I will be requesting a replacement from Amazon as it did tarnish the novel for me and it is not what I expected from such a luxurious looking book, frankly. I feel it is only right to draw other reader's attention to it, should the same thing occur with your copies.
Overall: fabulous story (of course- I have given it four stars after all), wonderfully gorgeous cover (A for effort)- but please be careful what else may be lurking within your copy!
