Product Description

Constant fascination and uninhibited suspense... behind its serene and lustrous surface of walnut panelling, old silver and fabulous jewels, there seethes a delicious suggestion of refined passion, mysterious poisons and slow death. NEW YORK TIMES. Based on the best-selling novel by Daphne du Maurier (author of the peerless Rebecca), My Cousin Rachel (1952) weaves an eerie tale of Gothic romance, set against the backdrop of the wild, rock-ribbed Cornish coast. Richard Burton, in his first American film role, stars as an anguished young Englishman, torn between dark suspicion of and an uncontrollable passion for his guardian s widow, the alluring and mysterious Rachel (Olivia de Havilland). With atmospheric direction by Henry Koster (The Robe) and a darkly romantic score by Franz Waxman (Sunset Boulevard), My Cousin Rachel is a seductive entry in the annals of cinematic ambiguity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superbly crafted Daphne Du Maurier adaptation 31 Dec 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Superbly crafted with excellent performances by Burton and De Havilland, this never quite scales the heights of Rebecca, but it is an entertaining film for those wet Sunday afternoons. The quality of the picture and sound is great so presumably it is a digital transfer by Fox. Thoroughly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A young Richard Burton 11 Dec 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This was Richard Burton's first American film made in 1952, co-starring Olivia de Haviland and set on the Cornish coast. The story was from the novel by Daphne du Maurier. The main character, Richard Burton, is torn between dark suspicion of the female character, a beautiful Olivia de Haviland, and his uncontrollable passion for her, and indeed we are kept guessing until the very end of this drama. Was she there to take over the estate, or did she return his love? How can we resist that distinctive voice of Burton, especially playing the anguished young Englishman. A must for admirers of the author, and the two stars.

This DVD is exactly what I expected. The condition is excellent and I will watch it many times. I always recommend this system to friends and there are no other outlets with such a wide range of older vintage DVDs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic black and white 30 April 2014

Olivia de Havilland always good, a real fan of the old black and whites, another good one, prefer to find out what happened at the end instead of leaving you guessing.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Cousin Rachel dvd 27 Sep 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is a faithful adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's famous book, some details of course changed or omitted. If you love the classics you will enjoy it.
Both Olivia de Havilland and Richard Burton were great in their roles, but sadly the film is a bit too dark and misses a lot of the book's clever humour.
It's well worth watching though, keeps you interested in the story until the end.

Picture and sound quality on the dvd are very good. There are no extras, apart from the trailer, and unfortunately no subtitles.

The actors are good but Richard burton seems habitually angry and vengeful when Du Maurier depicts the young man as a far more rounded character with less mood swings!

Good story line but very silly in parts. Very good actors but the film could have been better. Not one of my favourites.
