Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

After years of Italian horror pigeon-holing, came breaks in the 1990s with Shallow Grave, Jack and Sarah and Photographing Fairies. Simon Boswell may have had to wait patiently to diversify, but it was worth it. Fulfilling a stylistic ambition, Cousin Bette is a Chopin homage: from the racy "Paris 1846" the scene is set for nineteenth-century-style accompaniment to Jessica Lange's embittered plotting. Her darkest moments create some wickedly bombastic fury from the session orchestra ("The Devil Has A Sister"). The flipside are the many black humoured sequences depicting schemes coming to fruition, which are carried by lithe bouncing melodies ("Boating") to assure you that it's OK to laugh. Boswell also had the none-too-taxing task of coaching a vocal performance from Elizabeth Shue for her bum-baring stage act. Both "The Tiger Song" and "The Other Side Of Heaven" feature her irrelevant crooning (neither audience on screen or off is listening). Several period pieces by Pierre de Béranger were arranged by Danny Troob, and they meld unnoticeably with Boswell's original score. --Paul Tonks

A Proper Piece of Work 12 Jun 2001

I have never bought a soundtrack from movie for it's own sake, but I may buy this one, mainly to have the recording of Henrik Wager singing Spera O'Marinar. As an aside; from the opening credits track , all the way through the movie, the soundtrack intermeshes and compliments the action of the movie so perfectly, itself becomes a work of art more tangible than the sculpture that was never fully released from the granite in the movie. O'Marinar left me wanting to hear more. See the movie! Barbalin

Tuneful and charming. A fine accompaniment to the movie which also was quite well done. We have actually listened to the sound track many times and it still is delightful.
