Amazon.co.uk Review

Any child who has ever wanted a dog will identify with the two children in this story, who have to face all the usual objections from their parents when they ask for a do|g. Mum and Dad are particularly insistent that the dog they choose should have a pedigree and be a ‘proper dog'. The children have other ideas, however, and specifically seek out ‘a dog that nobody wants'. And that is how they come by Courtney who moves in with his big trunk and begins cooking, serving at the table, playing the violin and even juggling to entertain the baby. When Courtney vanishes one day along with his trunk the children don't lose faith and when they are rescued from their rubber dinghy while on holiday they feel sure that Courtney is not far away after all.

Picking up a familiar theme in John Burningham's books, and one close to children's hearts, Courtney is a old mongrel who nobody wants but he turns out to be a very special dog indeed with many talents. It is clear from the charming illustrations that Courtney is a discerning dog with his bushy eyebrows and dignified stance – a dog with far more to offer than a pedigree! Children will love him. (Ages 3 and over) --Alison Jardine

Review

"Burningham gives a familiar scenario his own inimitable spin...When 'the children' beg for a dog, the usual debate ensues. Permission is finally granted...but the parents are horrified when the children bring home a mongrel...Courtney, however, turns out to be a paragon who cooks delicious meals, plays the violin, cleans house, and rescues the baby when a fire breaks out. Still, when he disappears, the parents observe, 'If they are not thoroughbreds, you cannot rely on them.' In a final sequence, the kids are saved from drifting out to sea by a hero identified only in the background as their erstwhile companion...Witty, well told, superbly illustrated."

4.0 out of 5 stars Another winning "dog tale" by Burningham, 22 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Courtney (Red Fox picture books) (Paperback)
Courtney is an old and wise dog that three children bring home from the Dog's Home. He is the dog that nobody wants and definitely NOT the pedigree that the parents told the children to get.
Nevertheless, Courtney wins the hearts of the whole family through his many talents - cooking, cleaning and playing the violin amongst them.
One day Courtney vanishes and the children are especially disappointed. However, when on holiday and the children's dinghy drifts away, it is mysteriously pulled to shore. The implication is that Courtney is still watching over the family. He is not clearly visible but can be traced through careful scrunity of the illustrations.
This book is beautifully illustrated and the combination of these and the written text raises questions to ponder (if one chooses to). In my experience children love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtney, 14 Aug 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Courtney (Red Fox picture books) (Paperback)
This is a charming, touching book, as is typical for John Burningham. Courtney is a very understated super mongrel dog who is adored by the children he lives with, in contrast to their parents who are nasty and picky. My children love this book and I buy it for all my friends' children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtney a hot dog, 26 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Courtney (Hardcover)
Courtney is a great book that children will enjoy time and time again. It is about a mongrel dog that nobody wants, who is taken in by two children. The dog can cook wonderful meals, entertain the baby and he even rescued the same baby from a house fire. It is amusing how the parents of the children remain cynical about Courtney despite his obvious talents, due to the fact that he is not a thoroughbred but a mongrel. The book is well illustrated throughout and well written it is witty and funny and is an enjoyable read for children and parents alike.
