Book Description

27 May 2013
Tennis has never before been blessed with such an array of talented stars doing battle for the sport's most coveted titles. Games featuring Murray, Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, the Williams sisters and Maria Sharapova are among the most thrilling matches in the history of the game and Neil Harman has witnessed them all. He is so close to the beating heart of tennis that he has become a confidant to many of the game's stars and administrators, even at one stage mentoring Victoria Azarenka to help her handle the media pressure at the top of the women's game. In short, Neil enjoys a privileged access that is unmatched elsewhere in the sport. Here he shares tennis's most intimate secrets in a book replete with personality, excitement, drama and intrigue. Featuring frank, in-depth interviews with all the leading players, their coaching staff, their agents and managers, Harman presents the game from an insider's perspective and offers the fresh insights and strong personal views for which he is celebrated. Court Confidential recounts a defining time for modern-day tennis: from Wimbledon to the Olympic Games, from Serena Williams's battle with illness to Andy Murray's historic grand slam victory, this is a book for tennis fans everywhere.

Review

A great journalist and remarkable person who values the players and always promotes tennis in the best possible way with his avid appreciation and understanding of our sport. --Novak Djokovic

I have got to know Neil all these years and like him personally but the most important thing is that he is a very well-informed journalist and is respected in all that he does. --Rafael Nadal

Despite his poor taste in shirts, his journalism has earned him many awards and the respect of players; his longevity in the game speaks for itself. --Andy Murray

A lively analysis of professional tennis benefits from the author's closeness to the game's stars... As the title hints, what makes this book special are the disclosures to which Harman is often privy thanks to his cordial relationships with so many of the sport's prominent figures… Taking full advantage of his status, and forever diligent and enthusiastic, Harman delves into the big issues of the day. --The Observer

Taking full advantage of his status, and forever diligent and enthusiastic, Harman delves into the big issues of the day as he scurries from match to press conference to victory parade in Dunblane, remarking on how his own reporting role has altered over the years. --The New Review

I see Neil not as a journalist, but as a huge part of the tennis world that makes our sport so valuable. --Victoria Azarenka

An interesting insight into the ATP tour. At times it is repetitive, but do not be deterred by this factor.

By Nathan
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This really is a fantastic insight into the past twelve months of tennis, from a man who follows the sport all year round. The respect he has from the players is brilliant too. I'd fully recommend it to any tennis fan. A great account of the sport, along with what goes on as the Tour travels around the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential read for tennis fans 30 Jun 2013
By DGB259
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
If you want a book about 12 months in front of and behind the scenes in Tennis, this is the one for you! It takes into account the four Grand Slams of 2012, along with the Olympics and various Masters Series events, culminating in the World Tour Finals at the 02 in November.

I have been an avid fan of the sport for over 30 years now, and even taking that into account learnt things in this book that I was unaware of. Well written, well paced, informative and certainly meriting a follow up. Maybe even a yearly version please Neil! For those of you interested in a similar book, try "Hard Courts" by John Feinstein. Admittedly released over 20 years ago now, but worth tracking down.

Neil Harman has been an established Tennis writer for many years and knows his subject inside out. Most tellingly, the players respect him. For example Andy Roddick, who is not exactly known for suffering fools gladly (and why should he!) describes Mr Harman as one of the "good guys". The likes of Djokovic, Azarenka and Murray all speak highly of him.

One final thing, those of you out there who are tennis fans I suggest you follow Neil on Twitter. Always an interesting read and not without humour! You may even be lucky and find he takes the time to reply to you!i
