The crash course series of titles have been by many medical students seen as the preferred method of revising for their exams. The style of these books is not to teach you the topic from scratch, but assuming that you have the basic knowledge, these titles then cover the main facts for you plus a bit extra depth.
This title on Paediatrics would certainly assist any medical student looking to revise for Paediatrics in their medical school exams due to its more brief nature so that you can read an entire chapter in a very short amount of time dependent on your reading speed and familiarity with the topic.
The advantages of the title as such are that it is concise, covers most if not all of the essential paediatric topics that you would be expected to know for your written papers and that it includes a sample of exam style questions at the end.
The disadvantages of this text in this reviewers opinion are that it is not a colour textbook as such with a pretty much ghastly yellow/orange throughout the whole series of clinical titles which can become quite sickly if you've got the whole series. On a more serious notes this is to the detriment of some diagrams in the text that would have been better served by being in full colour. Additionally when there is extra detail included for the more able students, this is not highlighted so that those students who aren't in the top part of the year can end up reading & attempting to learn high level facts at the possible neglect of the more essential facts.
In conclusion I would personally not recommend this title as your first line revision text in Paediatrics. If you want a book that covers the essentials in preparation for your medical school exams & includes useful diagrams then as a revision title I would suggest Paediatrics at a Glance to be the better title. If you are looking for a textbook that also makes a useful revision title then why not consider Paediatrics and Child Health: Includes Free Desktop Edition. If however you are looking for a slightly more detailed revision title that gives you beyond the core essentials with not too many diagrams then this title could well be for you.
