My husband and I are into genealogy and thought this might be useful! Little did I know! I am currently about 1/3 of the way through my Mum's vast collection of old photo albums and the family are already enjoying the odd previewed photo before I eventually put them onto a CD so that they can all have a digital copy of all the albums!

I love the fact that you have two options to scan, either lifting the lid as with a normal scanner, or lifting the lid off altogether (which is easy, but not too easy to happen accidentally) and then turning the scanner directly over onto wall pictures, larger photos or indeed anything at all!

The SD card it comes with has software on that allows you to "stitch" part-scanned photos together, which I have now used very successfully on an old loooonnngg panoramic school photo and a large single portrait and an even larger cross-stitched family tree which is hanging on my wall! You only need to ensure the "part-scans" overlap an inch or so and then the software does the rest! FABULOUS!

If there is any downside, it's all the time I'm going to have to spend to crop/repair the quality of the photos once they're on my PC, but obviously that is in no way the fault of the product! In fact having this device has given me the spur to get on with the scanning of the old photos which I've "been meaning to do" for years. Now I do it as I watch TV, easy!

The whole device is light enough to carry with you on visits so that if you have an opportunity to scan an old photo or recipe or pattern you can!

I did compare the quality of PHOTOS of these old photos to scans of them and the scans are WAY better, certainly enough to warrant the investment.

So simple to use and as I am deeply into family history it has a multitude of uses from medals and coins to photo swaps. Great improvement in quality compared to taking photographs of photographs and scanning as everything can be done with items in situ. Also brilliant for keeping a record of valuables etc in case you ever get burgled. Money well spent.

This mobile scanner is brilliant! Good quality scanning and easy to use. I take it with me to scan family photographs from relatives and friends or to the library. The screen is roughly A5 or large postcard size. For A4 or bigger just 'flip' it over and scan the large surface as per the guide lines in the scanner - it prints off as a whole picture. Batteries included which allowed me to scan 50 - 60 large photos and documents (I would recommend taking spares as the batteries it came with ran out before I had finished scanning - 4 x AA's). I would have preferred it to have had a rechargeable battery as is the norm these days. The USB adaptor is useful but not needed if you have a card slot on your computer or printer. Very good value for money. Female aged 60 plus.

I hadn't heard of a mobile scanner until I received a news letter from my family history society where this particular one had been favourably reviewed. I thought it would come in very useful for some of the data collection exercises we get involved in, so bought one as a Christmas present for my wife along with a custom case that is sold as an accessory. Now that we have handled and used it, I can confirm that it fully lives up to my expectations and is a well made quality product, that has full company back-up having undergone stringent testing by them. The instrument is supplied with everything needed to put it straight to work, including batteries, SD data storage card, and a USB converter to allow data transfer to a PC. The unit scans at around A5 size, but comes with built in software that allows several scans of a larger document to be 'stitched' together into one. It can be operated as either a straightforward document scanner in the conventional way, or with it's lid removed, can be held over photographs in albums, and records that can't be removed for scanning in the conventional way. A brilliant piece of kit!

People have asked me why I need a mobile scanner when I have an excellent camera to photograph documents, pictures, etc. This serves a slightly different purpose and is ideal for my family history research, also it's great fun (and easy) to use.

I have been visiting relatives of men commemorated on a War Memorial, naturally they will not allow you to take their precious papers away so this is ideal, better that a camera, no need for the correct lighting, no flashback on items behind glass. perfect replication.
