Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

Coupling is a witty, instantly addictive series that charts the tangled sex lives of a close-knit group comprising "exes and best friends": womaniser Jack, hapless nice guy Steve, "strange and disturbing" Jeff, uninhibited Susan, neurotic Sally and manipulative Jane. The obvious frame of reference is Friends (Steve and Susan are the Ross and Rachel equivalent), but this series also echoes Seinfeld in its coinage of catchphrases and plot lines (in episode one, Steve tries to dump Jane, who refuses to accept). But it's no mere British clone of US sitcoms: Coupling has its own fresh and provocative take on relationships. At one point, a furious Susan discovers that Patrick not only had a videotape of the former couple having sex, but that he also taped over her. --Donald Liebenson

By M. Gardner VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Imagine taking Joey out of Friends. Imagine taking the Cat out of Red Dwarf. Imagine removing Baldrick from Blackadder's side. What if there was no Barney in How I Met Your Mother, no GOB in Arrested Development or if Green Wing was lacking Dr. Alan Statham. Such occurances would by no means spell the end of a show (probably for commercial reasons), but they should. Ensemble comedy is exactly that. There are several cogs, and they are all integral. Yeah the show can go on, but it won't be quite as good.

The same can be said of Coupling Season 4. No Jeff means less laughs. Not necessarily because Oliver, try as he might, is any less technically funny, but because over three previous seasons we've grown to love and appreciate everything that Jeff did and said. Would the show be the same if Patrick or Steve had left? No, it would have suffered greatly. The same for the characters of Susan, Jane and Sally.

The trouble with this season is that it's different. The emptiness left by Richard Coyle's departure is felt all the more keenly precisely because Oliver is basically superfluous. We already had a witty, nervous, wreck of a man in Steve,, and the sheer bizarre audacity of some of Jeff's comedy is sorely lacking.

Moffat's writing is still sharp as ever, and the rest of the cast are on form as always. The feel is the same, the tone identical. But the dynamic has changed, and not for the better. Unavoidable perhaps, but lamentable all the same.

Give it a try. There are still some very funny laugh-out-loud moments, and the character development of the old core five is excellent. But there is definitely something lacking. And his name is Jeff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff, Britain! 16 Oct 2001
Format:VHS Tape
All of a sudden my late night TV viewing habits have shifted from Leno and Letterman to a curious never-heard-of-it-before sitcom about a sextet of "Friends", 3 female, 3 male (hmmm, sound familiar?). The show (series 1) started airing 11:30pm for 6 nights last week, on BBC America, and is about as well written and funny a program as ever there was. And I am hooked.

As a native New Yorker, grown tired years ago of "Friends" (I cringe when having to witness the show's Hollyweird depiction of a NYC street scene, replete with stereotypes that disappeared when Elvis was in knee-pants), "Coupling" is a clever, well-performed and hilariously entertaining breath of fresh air.

5.0 out of 5 stars I nearly wet myself laughing !!! 25 Sep 2001
Format:VHS Tape
This is the best sitcom on TV at the moment by far. Try to explain it to someone who hasn't seen it and you won't be able to explain why you were creased up in pain from laughing.

It's a bit like Friends meets a Whitehall farce with a generous dash of weirdness thrown in (ever seen Spaced ?), the type of weirdness that reflects real life, the things we do which are not spoken of !!

Still, while series one is fantastic, the first episodes of series two are even better. I can't wait for them to come out on video. Then I'll have to prepare for weeks before I can bring myself to watch episode one again !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the DVD of the second series 16 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Format:DVD
One of the best series the BBC has shown in years. Every episode guides us inevitably into a ridiculous situation, and yet it always seems so natural that these characters would get into such a mess.

Situation comedy at its best.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a word - GREAT! 1 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Format:DVD
Sitcoms normally have a brief shelf-life before they become stale and boring, but this is not the case with Coupling (series 3). Steve Moffat keep up the momentum with his sharp and insightful writing - and seemingly has the grasp of both the male and female attitudes to relationships. "Unconditional Sex" must become a classic episode when Jeff agrees to meet up with a female co-worker from the office. He is already "seeing" Julia, so gets help from his friends by means of a concealed mobile telephone. Jeff squirms wonderfully as the predatory female co-worker closes off every avenue of escape.
Each of the seven episodes on the DVD are excellent. The second disc contains interviews with the stars of the show and a number of out-takes - although I could not see the point of the so-called "Unfilmed Script Extracts."

5.0 out of 5 stars Friends, what Friends??? 17 May 2004
Format:DVD
Take it from someone who used to, kinda, enjoy Friends every now and then: all those who dare to compare Friends and Coupling have no idea what they're talking about! You simply can't compare a lame, pathetic, plain vanilla excuse of a sitcom to a brilliant, racey, inventive, side-splitting rollercoaster of fun. What's funny is that I'm not even British or native English speaker for that matter, so some of the jokes have regretably gotten wasted on me! However, I haven't laughed that hard since Seinfeld (nor I thought I ever would). Needless to say I'm completely addicted, and since my da*n cable provider doesn't carry BBC America, I guess, I'll have to wait until season 4 comes out on DVD. As to American remake of Coupling, all I can say is - please! As one of the reviews on the Internet said, one can't duplicate brilliance. How true!

5.0 out of 5 stars The English Friends? Way better!!! 2 Feb 2007
Format:DVD
I remember when the series launched on the Beeb with many comparisons made to Friends. Yes, it is about 3 men and 3 women, but there the similarity ends. For starters, every episode is FUNNY!! I've never bought a dvd of a tv series before, but this has been played to death. It is so perceptive of male and female insecurities (the sock moment, women's bottoms having a growth cycle of their own ...), the different ways men and women can perceive the same event, in fact the different ways different people can perceive the same event. Steve trying to wriggle out of his porn viewing habits by describing Lesbian Spank Inferno as a liberating tale of a female film collective makes me weep with laughter, even on the umpteenth viewing. Series 2 to 4 will soon be coming to a dvd player very near me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Out of the Nudity Buffer, into the Giggle Loop
