Amazon.co.uk Review

It's a testament to the Wildhearts' amazing prolificacy that this Coupled With's 20 tracks are drawn from the B-sides of just four singles: "Vanilla Radio", "Stormy in the North", "So into You" and "Top of the World". Furthermore, the band's enduring excellence is proven by the frightening consistency of the work herein. Coupled With is possessed of a restless energy way beyond the reach of most. And unlike, say, the Huntingdon Beach punk crowd or the Nu-Rock metal merchants, the Wildhearts do not spend their energy solely in performance, but clearly focus intently on the writing and production processes. Veering between racing power pop, searing punk and punishing metal (often in the same song), they've always been hard to define. Their lyrics too--usually positive, sometimes bitter, often hilarious--are never clichéd, as you can tell here when juxtaposing "Eager To Please 'Er" ("You're trying to please her/Now you're on your back like a golden retriever?) with Lake of Piss ("You're selling your soul/On a lake of piss"). They never stay still. Each of these rocking, raging songs is packed with asides, drops and extra melodies, as you'd expect from the Wildhearts, an intelligent and richly colourful band at the height of their powers. --Dominic Wills

4.0 out of 5 stars Wildhearts B-Sides are better than many bands A-Sides!, 4 Mar 2004
By Alan North (Dundee, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having spent a fortune to collect all the B-Sides from their post-reformation singles, I was somewhat miffed to see the appearance of this B-sides' collection. Never mind, the more people who hear them the better.

Music wise, it's traditional Wildhearts B-sides fare. We're talking a large number of (very) heavy rock tracks alongside some punky numbers and the occasional album-esque track which was obviously deemed not suitable for the album. The Wildhearts tend to use their B-sides as an outlet for Ginger's insatiably eclectic song writing abilities. So be prepared for a wide range of styles from one of the UK's most-underrated bands of all time.

This also includes A-Side and MIA album track Stormy in the North. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just another throwaway compilation, 29 Mar 2004
When The Wildhearts reformed in 2002 they made it clear that they didn't want to simply tour on past glories like a lot of band's from the early 90s have done. You got the feeling that the band realised that they had never reached their full potential.

So it was back to basics. This involved a lot of touring of small venues and the gradual building up to an album through singles. This started with Vanilla Radio in September 2002, Stormy In The North Karma In The South in January 2003, and So Into You in May 2003. Each single making the UK top 30.

Only after these 3 singles did they release an album The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed. The main argument about the album was its 32 minute length. A lot of us felt a little bit cheated because of the length, but I also felt that some of the tracks on the album had been eclipsed by the earlier b-sides on the 'comeback' singles.

So that being the case I'm very happy with this new b-sides compilation. OK, so I've got all the tracks before on the various single formats but it's great to have them all in one place. And the tracks really are worth buying twice.

With the band currently touring the States with The Darkness, a small band from Lowestoft, long overdue success might finally be coming The Wildhearts way.
