I've been quite blown away by this charity shop purchase. It sounds stupid, but I bought it (1952 first edition hardcover, £1.99) because the typography and paper looked good, and it had some nice hand-drawn illustrations. I hadn't even connected it's author with that dreadful Darling Buds of May TV series of some years back - my ignorance is disgraceful I know.

So I began reading with few expectations, and was more than pleasantly surprised. It's not a novel, and it's not a textbook, but something between the two - chapters of descriptive writing which follow the months and seasons in sequence, with interconnecting autobiographical passages. It's a book where you can wallow in the fantastic descriptive writing - highly evocative of the English countryside in all its changing glory, and hugely nostalgic, but not overly sentimental or romantic, very taut and sparce - Hemingway-esque in character if that makes sense to you.

Anyway I read it speedily from cover to cover, and it has sparked a latent interest in flowers and trees and gardening, and spurred me on to learn more about both the author and his subject matter. I don't think you can ask more of a book than that. It goes on my list of treasured works.
