Book Description

2 Jan 2009

The gorgeous women of Churchminster know exactly what they want - a constant flow of champagne (on tap at the local pub) and the love of a good man.

But faced with the likes of braying, beer-guzzling farmer Angus, foul-tempered Lord Fraser and suave banker Sebastian (devoted only to himself), their attentions are increasingly drawn to more attractive possibilities . . .

Meanwhile, when a part of their beloved village comes under threat from a villainous property developer and his bulldozer, the community is united by a different kind of passion.

Can they raise enough money to save Churchminster? Will Mick Jagger turn up to the charity ball? And can a person actually die from too much extra-marital sex?

Review

All hail the glorious return of the romp... Sexy, scandalous and all firmly tongue in cheek this'll have chick lit quaking in its Manolo Blahnik boots (Heat )

Carnegie gives Jilly Cooper a run for her money... A rip-roaring romp with a cast of colourful caricatures... a racy read that'll have you snorting with laughter (Glamour )

Pacy, racy and enormous fun! (Tasmina Perry )

A right corker! Very much in the Jilly Cooper vein... fast, sexy, fun, and we think you'll love it - a lot (Closer )

I read Country Pursuits in one sitting - it was a real hoot and unputdownable! (Lorraine Kelly GMTV )

4.0 out of 5 stars Hello Churchminster! 13 Jan 2012
By C. Rucroft VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I have had Jo Carnegie's series of books on my bookshelf for ages but I haven't got round to reading them. Anyway, I finally read the first one.

I loved it! When I saw the map at the front I thought there were going to be too many characters but I was wrong. I didn't have any problems remembering who was who. I liked all the characters and loved their quirky little ways.

In this book the story centres around the villagers rallying together to buy a piece of land in the village, that they don't want a property developer to buy. It's not only funny but quite heartwarming. Of course, it's completely unrealistic as Churchminster is a village of rather wealthy people! The sub-plot with the vicar was a nice twist.

The only bit I didn't like was the ending which I just found daft. How could Archie go from what he was to doing that?!

Anyway, I really enjoyed it and can't wait to be back in Churchminster soon (the order is Country Pursuits; Naked Truths; Wild Things; Dirty Tricks; and Horse Play, which is due out on the 19th January.) Be warned though, this is definitely a bonk-buster and probably wouldn't be suitable to give certain people!

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy read and enjoyable 8 Dec 2011
By Louise
Format:Paperback
Even though the book looks long, it doesn't take too long to read. This is because it is not too taxing in terms of plot, but also because I couldn't put it down. It was a light hearted book which I enjoyed because I could switch off and at the end I really did want to know what happened to the characters!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great debut book 25 Feb 2012
By c1h8e0l
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the first book in the Churchminster series written by Jo Carnegie. I have a love hate relationship with chick lit, this one is a great rom-com in book format. It several points I actually laughed out load and there are a couple of tear jerking moments too. The characters are well developed and the reactions are complex enough to involve you but not too much to confuse you. There is a certain amount of bed hoping but the whole book doesn't centre around it like many others do-it's described enough for you to fully understand what is going on but its not in such embarrassing detail that its difficult to read. I have already ordered the next couple of books in the series and will see if they are as good as the first. Here's to hoping...
