This review is from: Country Pubs & Inns of Sussex (Travel Publishing) (Paperback)
Having recently moved to Sussex, I wanted a book that listed all the pubs in the area, but also helped me choose the best ones to go to. This book does comprehensively list the pubs, but offers almost no detail on them, and does not give any indication as to whether the pubs are good or bad.
90% of the pub listings are simply "name, address, ale, food, disabled access, etc". The other 10% of the pubs are given a half page plus photo, but these are just adverts that have been paid for by the pub! (as acknowledged at the back of the book).
The problem of this system is evident with the 3 pubs nearest my house. I would avoid them like the plague - unfriendly, rude staff, poor beer, dirty seats, etc. In this book they are simply listed as "Pub X, address, real ale". A visitor to the area could end up inside and wish they hadn't bothered.
Lastly, the maps are next to useless - a map of a large area (20 x 40 miles) is given 6x4", and tries to show the location of 100 pubs. This is just pointless, and impossible to use effectively.
So, if I could re-write this book I would give each map a double page spread, using O/S maps. Then, only include the pubs worth going to, with a full page, nice photo, brief description of the style of pub. Yes you'd miss a few pubs out in error, but they can always be added to the next edition.
As it stands, this book can be treated as a list, but you still have to visit each pub to decide whether it is worth visiting. I would stick to the Camra or AA pub guides for now.
