More About the Author

Cynthia Harrod-Eagles was born in Shepherd's Bush in London. She was educated at Burlington School, a girls' charity school founded in 1699, and at the University of Edinburgh and University College London, where she studied English, history and philosophy. She wrote her first novel while at university and in 1972 won the Young Writers' Award with THE WAITING GAME.

Afterwards she had a variety of jobs in the commercial world, while writing during the evenings and weekends. The birth of the MORLAND DYNASTY series enabled her to become a full-time writer in 1979. The series was originally intended to comprise twelve volumes, but it has proved so popular that it has now been extended to thirty-four.

In 1993 she won the RNA Novel of the Year Award with EMILY, the third volume of her Kirov Saga, a trilogy set in nineteenth century Russia, and she also writes the internationally acclaimed BILL SLIDER MYSTERIES.

Cynthia Harrod-Eagles still lives in London, has a husband and three children, and apart from writing her passions are music (she plays in several amateur orchestras) horses, wine, architecture and the English countryside.

A young woman is faced with problems both at work and in her love life and has to look in a new direction - not perhaps the most original plotline but rarely has it been dealt with better. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

One lousy Monday, Jenna loses her gorgeous job, her even more gorgeous boyfriend, and her home. In an attempt to put aside her personal woes, Jenna goes to catalogue books for an elderly cousin, Kitty Everest, at her country mansion. Horrified to discover that Kitty may be forced to sell Holtby House, Jenna throws herself into a scheme to save it. But when an attempt is made on her life, Jenna finds herself in a race to save Holtby, Kitty - and herself.

Normally when I've read a book cover to cover, with very minimal skimming, I give the book a minimum of 3 stars but, I just couldn't do that for this book. The hero was an insipid wuss and didn't seem to know his own mind!!! Also, literally, the last two pages was when we got the 'I love you' declaration and it just seemed false. The 'I love you' seemed tacked on at the end as if the author knew she was running out of page count and had to wrap it up.

This was my first C Harrod-Eagles book (and it wont be my last) but, still, I'm not recommending it.

I did like this book a lot, not quite a 5*. I have never read anything by this author but I will read more. I am a reviewer for my local library and I get all new books that are sent to them. I loved the humour, I wont say what the plot is, as I can get very upset when I come on here and somebody virtually sums up the story leaving little to read, so trust me, it is very worthwhile if you like easy, pleasant reading

Great characters...great setting....a good book to curl up with on a winter's afternoon....bit of a romance, bit of a mystery, with the predictable "nice" ending....no regrets with this read.

Good characters, even the baddies. Nice plot arc. Predictable but fun.

Try her police procedurals as well. Different tone but same good characterisation.

I really appreciate the good writing.
