Not the most sophisticated of interior design books bearing in mind this is a paperback so is not really a coffee table book, but if you're looking to add some cottage style to your home, it does what it says on the box. I didn't realize when I bought it that it was an American publication, as I just assumed cottage style was the domaine of the English countryside, but as the reviewer below points out, American cottage style is a bona fide direction of interior design. Some very good ideas (loving the dutch doors - I want them) which I will be putting into practice as soon as I've won the lottery or the credit crunch is over, whichever happens first.

American Cottage style is not sophisticated...and that's its charm (referring to the previous critique). It is a sort of "make do" style of decorating that employs vintage items (20's, 30's, 40's 50's with a mixuture of other found items.) It's a frayed tea towel, rather than a perfect color coordinated one. It's a chipped bowl rather than porcelain.

I loved this book. This is just the style I was looking for: soft furnishings; warm pastel colours; overstuffed sofas and armchairs. I have certainly got a lot out of this book.
