Product Description

Product Description

Presents a first person account of passion, murder and cultural conflict played out in the person of the young Ann Goodman, who is torn by 'the struggle for supremacy in her mixed blood', Welsh and English. In this love story, set in the late nineteenth century, the rural way of life is no idyll, but a savage and exacting struggle for survival.

About the Author

Margiad Evans was born Peggy Whistler in Uxbridge in 1909, and lived in the Border area in Ross-on-Wye. The border was central to her consciousness, and she adopted the Welsh nom de plume, Margiad Evans, out of a sense of identity with Wales. As Peggy Whistler she attended (which college) and although she continued to paint and draw until late in her life, writing displaced art as her primary work. The Border is the setting of her first novel, Country Dance (1932) and of her second, The Wooden Doctor (1933), which is set in Ross-on-Wye. She published two additional novels: Turf or Stone (1934) and Creed (1936), as well as numerous articles and short stories, some of which were collected in The Old and The Young (date) and two collections of poetry Poems from Obscurity (1947) and A Candle Ahead (1956). Her Autobiography was published in 1943 and A Ray of Darkness, an account of her experience of epilepsy, appeared in 1952. She died of a brain tumour in 1958

I came across this novella as a "Book at Bedtime" on Radio 4, and I'm so glad I did. I had never heard of this writer or book. It is the story of a dairy maid, Ann Goodman, living on the English/ Welsh border in the nineteenth century. She torn between her warring desires, her English and Welsh sides, as much as she is between the two men in her life, one English, one Welsh. You know that this is never going to have a happy outcome, but the economical rendition of Ann's words in her journal give the novella a beautiful elegance.

a real country dance 9 Dec 2003
By jane zaccarini - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
this beautiful little book deserves to be up there with the classics;set in the welsh borderlands at the turn of the century it embraces love, death, and racial tensions between celt and anglo-saxon,and culminates in a trajedy that is more reflective and sad than tragic. this gently written book keeps us with its characters forever and leaves us thirsting for more of a kind. sadly margiad evans was not a prolific writer and only seems known in welsh literature, but deserves wider acclaim.
