For years I've tried to "put something together" that would meet the needs of my large family with kids spread over a large age range. Frustrated with the time I spent, I usually gave up long before December 1st. Never again! With thoughts for parents (and older children if you choose to use it that way) and younger children (interesting for all ages, including adults), Counting the Days, Lighting the Candles is perfect! What's more, every day is pure GOOD NEWS! As I read through the first week I honestly had tears as my heart was relieved of burden and refocused on the love of my Savior for me and my family. And if you're a tradition follower like I am, I love that Elyse and Jessica lay out what color candle to light and when to light it, and also give you the meaning behind each one. If you aren't so concerned with that kind of thing, I love that you truly feel the freedom to use "leftover sparkly birthday candles" as they so graciously offer. Additionally, Jamie Nato did a great job tying a simpl(y brilliant) activity / project to each week. Because I don't have a crafty bone in my body, the words "activity" and "project" usually make me break out in hives, but not these! Even I can pull off a simple scavenger hunt, that ALL of my children will enjoy or build a fort (or set up a tent) in my living room. Jamie even includes two or three questions to ask your children as you complete each activity. Finally, Elyse and Jessica's, easy, humorous writing style combined with their deep love and respect for The Word make this book the perfect Advent devotional. What a gift! Speaking of gifts, Counting the Days would make a great gift, too!
