Amazon.co.uk Review

Charlie Chaplin's last film is the cinematic equivalent of Willie Mays staying too long in baseball--a sad farewell from someone who has clearly lost his touch. Marlon Brando (who famously did not get along with Chaplin and initiated, with this film, his curious habit of undermining his directors' best intentions) plays an American millionaire leaving Hong Kong to assume an ambassadorship. He discovers Sophia Loren--playing a daughter of Russian aristocrats and a former gangster moll--concealed in his closet onboard the outbound ship, hoping to gain passage to the States. Brando, looking none too pleased, agrees to help her, with not terribly comic or romantic results. Chaplin's one modestly clever touch is to have the camera rock gently and slowly back and forth, ostensibly emulating the movement of the luxury liner. The humour falls flat, Brando and Loren have no chemistry, and the story isn't terribly engaging. The former Little Tramp appears, mercifully briefly, as a seasick steward who opens and closes a door, swooning in between. Appropriately enough, in silence. --David Kronke

Chaplin's last film and one I would highly recommend viewing. He takes two Hollywood stars and doesn't allow them to act as you would usually see them portrayed. He shows them in a series of comic situations that highlight the fact that these stars are only people. They can look foolish and human and this in turn helps us see the absurdity and banality of most Hollywood films. A little gem.

A COUNTESS FROM HONG KONG,1966,colour,in cinemas 1967 co-stars screen legends SOPHIA LOREN and MARLON BRANDO as well as SYDNEY CHAPLIN,TIPPI HEDREN,PATRICK CARGILL, and in a minor role as an old steward legendary CHARLIE CHAPLIN this film was Directored/Scripted/Music:-were all by Chaplin himself.
Beautiful-SOPHIA LOREN-plays Natascha a Russian Countess, she stows away on a luxury liner at Hong Kong, determined to seek a new life in America.Whilst on the liner the Countess meets a millionaire diplomat,Ogden[Brando],who helps the Countess reach the U.S.A. and a new life for herself.

A tired last attempt 30 Nov 2003
Format:DVD
Chaplin's last film is a never-ending series of doors being opened and closed, slammed in some cases - the same door, the same cabin aboard a ship with exiled Russian countess Sophia Loren as a blind passenger locking herself in with married oil millionaire Marlon Brando. There are scenes in the film that work, but they are few and far between. Every time the doorbell buzzes, it's like a jolt going through your body and you realize you were about to fall asleep. Cinematography is gorgeous, and so is La Loren. A very tired last attempt by Chaplin, the man that gave us so much from the mid-10's and onwards.
