Like everyone else, I'm interested in the science behind so-called "anti-aging" recommendations, and there's some interesting information here - though nothing you won't find in many popular magazines and newspapers. In fact, I heard of this book through a newspaper review and decided to buy it based on that review. What a disappointment! All the useful information was contained in that review, so I didn't need to buy the book at all! The superfoods (broccoli, dark chocolate, etc.); the Botox injections (which I'm happy to note that the author decided to go without, as they make people look really odd and not younger); exercise programmes, and so on - all this, you already know. The author, who coyly doesn't give her age, is probably in her early 60s, according to the review, and has tried out some of the diet and exercise programmes. This would have been interesting and could have been fun to read, but the style is so irritating that it was really hard work. It's very American, newspaper-style, forced "humour" which becomes extremely tedious the more you read. For example, instead of telling us that she fell on her face during a yoga session, Ms Kessler has to distort it to saying that she "flatfaced"! Really? That's not a word, that a tricksy, too-clever-by-half attempt to jazz up a basically mundane incident. And that's typical of the style this book is written in. It's like being asked to dinner at a friend's house but then being forced to listen the host's precocious kid torturing the h*** out of her violin before you're allowed to eat! The food provided here is quite sparse, the show-off kid's performance is excruciating.

Far better is "How to live to 100" by John Robbins and others. Get that, and forget about Ms. Kessler's "flatfacing"!

I don't think aging is anyone's favorite subject. But, all the effort people go to counteracting the effects of aging can an amusing and entertaining topic. Lauren Kessler has discovered this, putting a lot of fascinating information, witty journalism, and her willingness to be the guinea pig into a fun little book. Her exploration takes us through everything from diet, yoga and exercise that anyone can undertake, to expensive surgery and hormone therapy for the wealthy. All the while supplying interesting, understandable translations of all that is technical along the way.

Just finished reading Counterclockwise by Lauren Kessler and thoroughly enjoyed it. I turned 60 this year and although I am very active and work full time I felt that turning 60 meant it was time to slow down and give up. This book made me realize it 's not me, it' s the world out there that made me feel this way. I may not be a size 2 with flawless skin and perky boobs but I still have a lot to offer and a lot of living to do...thank you Lauren.

By her own admission, journalist Lauren Kessler is a bit of a control freak. When she finds out that roughly 30% of our aging process is out of our control due to genes and the limits of nature, she decides to make the most of the 70% or so that she can do something about.

While she keeps her exact age a closely guarded secret, we can determine that she is probably around 60, and has been exercising and eating healthily for some time now. She realizes she can only do so much about extending her life span, but she wants to stay fit and active for as long as possible. We're invited along for the ride to see what she learns.

Kessler keeps an open mind about what may or may not help in her quest. She mentions her naturopath several times, and entertains the idea of using a variety of supplements and vitamins, some of which are recognized by the mainstream medical community, others which are not. She opens the book with her trip to a Las Vegas to attend an anti-aging convention. Later adventures have her trying several types of yoga, having her photo digitally aged, and taking a plethora of online "real age" tests.

It's mostly fun, somewhat informative, and while you'll probably learn a few new things, you already know what to do -- eat less, exercise more, don't smoke, and don't drink too much.

I always read these kinds of books, hoping to find out something that doesn't sound either nutty or out of my ability to do, and the nice thing about this book is it's full of idea so that even if you can't do some of them, there are others you can. I like the specificity about vitamins and superfoods. I am older than the author by about 10 years, I think, and if you think people think you are old at 60, try 70. We clearly have one and a half feet in the grave, even if we don't feel like it or look it. I'm off to work out with my trainer and because of this book I will ask her to up the ante. Thanks, Lauren. Not dead yet.

The author dabbles in a number of health practices to try to evaluate them. I'm someone who can honestly say that changing my eating habits changed my life. Therefore I was disappointed in some of Ms. Kessler's superficial assessments. It took me more than a year(Ms. Kessler gives it a couple of weeks) to see genuine, physician-certified results. I would have liked to have seen her make some real effort in the superfoods chapter.

The chapter on exercise was just a catalog of studies plus a list of every workout routine Ms. Kessler tried. Not much there for the average person who doesn't have the requisite narcissism or the time to pursue exercise 24/7.

I also wish Ms. Kessler had spent more time on health claims with genuine scientific merit--and less time on dubious things like detoxification. In some chapters she sums up the results by saying that she "felt great" or that something just "made sense." That kind of subjective evaluation is meaningless.

Also, I found myself irritated that Ms. Kessler keeps her age such a well-guarded secret-especially in the part of the book where she's talking about her physical age vs. her chronological age.

On the other hand, the chapter on supplements was excellent. It was a helpful summary of the state of the science with tips on how to research all the conflicting claims for this or that vitamin or herb.

Ms. Kessler has a lively, entertaining style and she kept me reading with her humor and spriteliness.
